The Somerville Theatre has converted one of its former box-office windows to sell Richardson's ice cream. The window will be open every afternoon and evening until at least 10 pm. They sell sundaes and frappes, too.

i didn't think i could love the somerville any more, what with their having Harpoon on draft, serving popcorn with real butter, and their totally reasonable prices. but now this! heaven = somerville theater, i think.

This is so funny. I read this post to my friend and said, "I didn't think I could love the Somerville Theater any more, but now it's heaven."

Then I clicked on the comments, and here you are, saying the same thing.

Cool...but isn't Richardson's the same ice cream Mr. Crepe sells, right next door?

Harpoon on draft?!? I totally missed this. This puts them a notch above the Capitol for me now.

You know, I'm really impressed with how enterprising the Somerville has been in keeping its doors open. Rather than close up and deprive people of something they love (cheap movies), they just keep adding more things people like (beer, ice cream, concerts)! A small business model which should be emulated everywhere...

I really hope the midnight movie thing takes off, more random stuff like what the Coolige does is what I'm looking for..

Where I grew up, what the northeast calls a frappe would be called a milkshake: ice cream + milk + optional flavorings, blended. (A "milkshake" here is milk + flavoring with no ice cream, IIRC.)

I used to always get the Oreo Frappes at the original Richardsons farm in Middleton. They are really good.

I hope this new place gets a real ice cream selection. Richardsons has way more flavors then they are selling there right now.

My dad claims that beer floats are good, but I don't much like beer, so I haven't experimented.

A friend of mine tried the Guinness and vanilla ice cream float once at a place in Kenmore and he claimed it was good. I would think dark beer would be better for this than lighter beers.

The sign on the window proclaims "generous portions!" Yeah yeah, whatever, I'll just have a small. Why is it taking so long to scoop out a small? Sigh, must be a new scooper, okay, here she comes...dear God. That's a small? Two large scoops for $3.00. Zowie.

Not too much milk. It is about thickness. I think it needs to be hard to suck it up the straw. (My opinion).

Capital Theater is selling Richardson's too, now.

The original 'float' is made with root beer and vanilla ice cream. I've never heard of the 'real' beer variation. It's a little similar to an ice cream soda, which is cream, soda water, and flavoring, with a scoop of ice cream on top.
