good run-of-the-mill film developer?

anyone know a good, reliable place to get film developed around here? walmart is a little out of my way now, and i utilized BJ's exactly once and never again, because they managed to mess up both my negatives and my prints (hairs in the light magnifier thing and scratches on the negatives and soforth). i know a bunch of drugstores have them, but i don't want another bj's experience.


what i'm looking for:

-developing "normal film," i.e. black and white/color film of mainly the 200/400 speed variety.

-i'm not looking for a strictly one-hour photo (unless they are goddamn exceptional). i have noticed a distinct difference in quality between one-hour and sendaway but nobody believes me.

-less expensive is preferable. i have eight rolls of film sitting around right now.

-if they do the "pictures on cd" option that'd be cool too.

-shouldn't even have to say this, but i will! consistent good quality is a must.

so i ask you all, which place has been good for you? :)

It's a bit more expensive than, say, CVS (who lost my negatives in the course of doing reprints this week), but it's good quality with a wide assortment of services available. Also, if you stop into the Harvard Book Store across the street and sign up for their free Frequent Buyer Card, you save 10% at Ferranti by showing it.

CVS has lost strips of my negatives (and hence the pictures that go with them) with my one and only time using them.

F-D is good but expensive and attitude laden sometimes to the point of pure obnoxiousness.

Moto-Foto in Harvard Square (near the entrance to the Garage shopping area) is a decent mix of dependable and affordable.

I send my film out to REI. High quality and decent prices if you're willing to wait the 2 week or so turn around via the mail.

hell, i'm so lazy with picking up pictures that two weeks is fast for me. ;) is there a website for REI?

They now call themselves Photoworks. I've been using them for almost a decade with maybe 40-50 rolls developed and dozens of enlargements made without a single problem ever. The website is http://photoworks.com/

They'll even email you the URL to look at your photos online before they arrive back. You can request photo cds (and also print off of digital/CDs).

Moto-Foto also has a one-hour option, and will transfer film to a CD.

York (http://www.yorkphoto.com/) is a mailorder service which is dirt cheap and, in my experience, reliable, although I wouldn't use them for the arty stuff. For a small fee on top of film developing/prints, they will also digitize your photos and make them available to you over the website, usually within the week. Turnaround on prints can be 7-14 days.

i just tried York for the first time, and they seem so far quite reliable -- and yes, dirt cheap.

for arty stuff i like Ferranti-Dege, but they're pretty expensive for run-of-the-mill jobs.
