bus question

Does the 88 bus stop outside the Davis Square T station on Holland Street when it is going inbound (from Clarendon Hill to Lechmere)? i.e., if I have just gotten off the Red Line and I want to get to Lechmere on the 88 bus, where should I go to catch it?

sorry if this is a dumb question -- my commute is in upheaval. sigh.

Yes, the 87 and 88 both stop in front of the Holland Street entrance. Both go to Lechmere.

If you just want to go somewhere down Highland Avenue, you're better off waiting in front of Dunkin Donuts, because the 90 also stops there.

Yes, that's correct. You want the Holland Street exit if you're heading toward Lechmere. The 87 also stops there, and also goes to Lechmere so you could take either one, though the 88 is likely to be a shorter bus ride.

The 87 comes much more often to lechmere I believe. I have not-so-fond memories of taking the 90 every day back in my medford days. But you get to learn about the interesting cast of characters at the lechmere bus stop, such as the bus director guy who looks suspiciously like cliff clavin from cheers.

I think the same number of 87 and 88 buses are scheduled, and they more or less alternate.

All I know is, the green line extension to medford can't come soon enough.

Quick guide to Davis Square bus stops:

Busway in front of College Ave T entrance:
87 to Clarendon Hill or Arlington Center
88 to Clarendon Hill
89 to Sullivan, via Broadway
90 to Sullivan and Wellington, via Highland Ave
94 to West Medford and Medford Square
96 to Medford Square

Holland Street in front of T entrance:
87 to Lechmere via Elm St and Somerville Ave
88 to Lechmere via Highland Ave

Dunkin Donuts
87 to Lechmere via Elm St and Somerville Ave
88 to Lechmere via Highland Ave
90 to Sullivan and Wellington via Highland Ave
96 to Harvard (not much reason to ever take this)

There are other stops in or near Davis Square, but these three are the only ones you really need.

Also useful: the 77 from Harvard to Arlington Heights stops on both sides of Mass. Ave., between Day and Dover streets.
