ABJ Foreign Auto on Marshall St (Near Medford St) is honest, fairly priced, and good with VWs. I've been going there for years.

I have a VW that tends to have a lot of problems, but when I had to have my exhaust looked at I took it to Meineke on Mass Ave in Arlington, and they did a great job. VW was no longer making the part they needed, so they welded one to fit and it cost less than a comparable VW part would have. They were also really responsive about calling me to let me know what was up with it at various stages (I've had a lot of mechanics not really do that even though I've asked). There's also a bus stop right outside the place that goes to Alewife, Porter, and Harvard.

It's not as close as others mentioned, but the Meineke in Brighton on Fanuiel Street is owned by a friend of mine(Steve) and they are good,honest, mechanics.
