Today is supposedly delivery day for those who pre-ordered Deathly Hallows on Amazon. Ordering this way was probably a mistake, given the complete failure of the Davis Square post office on Half Blood Prince delivery day. The book didn't come for weeks, and when I finally called Amazon, I learned that the Davis post office was so overwelmed with books that they threw their hands up and sent them ALL back to Amazon. Amazon refunded me for mine.

Here's where things stand on UPS tracking today with my book and presumably all HP7s coming from Amazon to 02144 books in 02144 seem to be shipping at different paces:

Oh my god, you're kidding me.

I had ordered one that way, then heard Porter Square Books was doing an event. So I ended up with two. One's in my hot little hands, and I guess the other is...gone? SHIT.

It was SUCH a crush. I hope they did a lot of business. I know I paid more for it than I did on Amazon, but I bear them a lot of goodwill for being a fun local bookstore with a lot of character.

Mine's here. Which is odd, because I didn't pay for shipping and received several e-mails warning me that it wouldn't come on the 21st and was I sure I didn't want to pay for shipping and get it along with everybody else?

My roommate paid for shipping, and slept on the couch in order to make sure he didn't accidentally miss the delivery. His isn't here yet.

My roommate? Well, it's a close thing, but he's still hanging onto a thread of hope. I think he'll pull through.

HA. still waiting for mine, and obsessively checking outside the door every 5 minutes or so to see if it has come. i want to get it before heading off to the church, but it's not looking likely as i have to leave in about an hour. ARGH, UPS!

Just curious: is that the tracking info as presented on Amazon.com, or on UPS.com? I just called my mom (since getting a copy shipped to me on opening day was a birthday present) to get the tracking info. She tracked it using the "track this" button (or whatever it says) on amazon.com, and I tracked it on UPS.com after she sent me the tracking number. We got different information.

I'm not in Davis anymore, but damnit, I want my book!

well, i called UPS to see what was up, and they said "if it is harry potter, it guaranteed delivery by 6pm". then a little while later, the doorbell rang. when i got there, HP was on my door step (i'd put up a sign asking UPS to just leave the book in case i wasn't home), and there was a man in brown running down the steps, so i thanked him.

hope yours gets there soon!

Oh and I forgot to ask...why did yours get into such an issue with the post office, doesnt your book come from UPS not USPS?

I also preordered for my sis in swampscott and oddly enough her book originated in Chelmsford...why my book went through 4 states is beyond me.

Though Amazon says it will be shipped by UPS, in practice they make a deal with USPS to deliver it. It's a unique situation.

I do think the ones from Amazon do; I saw a photo of the postal workers in New Jersey on Thursday when the packages were released sorting them.

I'm a prime member, so free shipping, guaranteed delivery. I wasn't sure how that was going to work, but...

Apparently Amazon UPS'd to USPS, and then USPS delivers today. Mine was dropped in my mailbox at 8:30 a.m. I'm between Union and Porter.

I'm fairly impressed with Amazon today.

this is exactly why I selected free shipping and had it set to deliver to my work. I can rest easy knowing it will come on Monday and definitely not before.

less stress :)

I'm on one of the cross-streets between Broadway and Holland and mine had shown up well before 11am. (They left it on the front porch.)
It does look like they UPS'd to USPS and USPS is doing the final delivery so the UPS
tracking data hasn't been updated with "Delivered".

I'm across the line in Cambridge and mine just arrived. The mailman actually rang the bell to let me know it was here. That's never happened before. Going off to read now.

If it's the same mailman (North Cambridge, just over the line), I <3 him, he always rings if there's a package. My book came at 10 and when I answered the door I said "OHMYGODTHANKYOU!" and he looked very startled.

Funny, I got mine Saturday around noon by walking into the Harvard Bookstore. No wait, no line, no hassle.

I guess that's just one of the advantages of supporting a local business.

I'm trying not to be too annoyed by what I perceive as the preachy, "aren't I so great" tone of your post.

That being said, there are several reasons why people wouldn't frequent their local bookstore. First of all, Davis does not have a bookstore which carries new books. The next closest one is Porter, and the store is of a size that I would be worried they would have run out.

You are correct, Harvard Book Store is a local business. BUT, give the "Hogwarts Square" event the night before, I'd be worried that they would have sold out at midnight. Secondly, i've only recently learned that Harvard Book Store is not owned by Harvard University. I doubt your average shopper or local person would know that, and I really don't consider giving money to Harvard as "helping out the little guy". Harvard has more than enough money, and I have more than my fair share of problems with some of the ways they run their business and treat their employees, especially those in the lower salary grades.

Yo have to keep in mind that people did not want to story spoiled, I know people who didn't even want to enter a store because they worried someone would talk about the book. I had that happen to me just walking to my mailbox. Every consumer has the right to purchase where they chose, and yes,I'd love if people supported local businesses, however larger business do come in handy, especially in cases like the harry potter release.

Wow. This has been fascinating... reading everyone's varying experiences with Amazon.

Mine showed up at 6:30 AM!!! on the 21st. (Scared the heck out of me...I was up, but no expecting a loud KERPLUNK on my doorstep). I have Amazon Prime, so I wonder if that made a difference. My post office is the Somerville PO on Washington in Union Square.
