Foam?

Hi, I'm really hoping someone can help me with this.   I have a sofa that my parents made 30 years ago when they were in grad school and it desperately needs new cushions.  They are not in any way a standard size as far as I know.  (the sofa itself is 6ft wide by 34 in deep and the cushions are 5in high).    My question is, where could I find someplace (hopefully nearby) that will sell foam that they will cut into pieces for me?  I don't have a car, but in a pinch I might be able to get a ride from someone if necessary.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I know that some fabric stores sell that stuff, and at least, when I worked at JoAnns we would cut it into pieces for you if we were feeling amiable.

If you can't get it cut, use a bread knife- it was the Secret JoAnns Weapon Against the Foam.

Last time I bought foam it was from Building 19. You may want to call: http://www.foamrubber.com/index.htm They are in Alston.

I'm in the midst of a chair reupholstery project myself, and I got my foam from The Fabric Place at the Woburn Mall. They were willing to cut exactly to my specifications.

Yes, this probably requires a car.

If you are willing to spend a bit of money there are quite a few places around that will do the entire project for you: bring the couch in, pick a fabric, and they'll redo the whole thing for you. You'd probably need to borrow a vehicle for both trips, though (Zipcar does rent some large vehix.... or you could call a cab company and ask for a van).

There's one ... I can't quite recall the name of it, but they're across the street from that car wash in Allston, near where the karaoke place is, by that horrible intersection with North Harvard Ave and... Cambridge St. is it? just up the hill from that tattoo parlor that's next to O'Brien's.

oh, damn, i know there are places but i don't know a specific place off the top of my head. all my parents' furniture is european so the cushion sizes for every pieces is not standard -- very very aggravating when the chairs needed re-doing or when the sofa cushions flattened. many times my mom has bought foam cut to size or cut it herself... if no one can help you out in the meantime i can ask her where she went.

(*not standard meaning not in inches, but in centimeters, so most of the EU furniture was like 1.5 inches too small)

If you want to go to the source, there is the Rogers Foam Corp on Vernon St, meeting all your foam needs since 1947.

You could probably get to Freddie Farkel's Fabric Outlet in Watertown by bus. It's located on 86 Coolidge Avenue in Watertown, near the Watertown Mall. They specialize in upholstery supplies, and have some pretty nice (and relatively inexpensive) upholstery fabrics. You could take the 70 bus from Central Square.

There are also several fabric stores downtown, although I don't know offhand which ones carry foam.

Foam Rubber Discount Center is your spot!

They're awesome. They cut some foam for me a few years ago when I was building a window seat. They're up in Allston near The Kells. They have a wide assortment of foam and they're really helpful because foam is all they do. You can even go in and make your own tempurpedic knockoff mattress.
