Lost cat?

Hi there,

I have a bit of a situation I'm hoping someone can help with. On Saturday, while I was moving, I noticed this gorgeous black cat with a small gold tag wandering on Albion Street (at the beginning, just off Central) and she stopped on my porch briefly. I noticed a name on the tag - Yakuza or something similar - and called the number on the tag, but got an answering machine. Left a message saying the cat was wandering around, cat wandered off, didn't think much about it.

Well, apparently, this cat is now in my old apartment, and no longer has the tag on. My landlord freaked and thought that it was my cat (I have a fuzzy black cat already), and is now freaking out because she doesn't know what to do with the cat.

So here's the question: 1) has anyone lost this cat recently? and 2) if nobody HAS lost the cat, does anyone WANT to take a very sweet, loveable cat home with them? I've already chatted with my boyfriend about it, and although the cat is adorable, we can't take her home with us.

I just moved to Watertown, and would really rather not have to return to the old place to deal with this; please buzz me at dani at tzk-design dot com if you have any information and I can give you my landlord's phone number.

Thanks in advance!

update: Turns out I was able to find the number by going into the T-Mobile website and looking back a few pages in my call listing. The owner is calling my landlord this afternoon. THank you all for your thoughts!

Huh... damn, I wish I werent deathly allergic, I'd grab her in a heartbeat. Have you posted this info on Craigslist? I'd like to think the cat's owner is out of town for a few days, and hasn't abandoned the cat - if she's in good condition, the owner may still want and be looking for her... :(

How coincidental. I read your post as I was petting a sweet cat who has temporarily moved in with me, much to my surprise. I'm up on Prospect Hill, so I didn't bother posting here about her being lost, and she seems to have been on her own for quite a while (months, I suspect, at least) and can take care of her own food (a lot fewer rats and birds in the neighborhood these days). But eventually I'll have to find her a more permenant home.

There's a cat shelter in Somerville (no kill, I believe, unlike the "Humane" Society) which hopefully can help both of us... I don't remember the name of it, but if you call the city's Animal Control woman, April, at 716-625-6600 (the city's main directory, then ask the kind robot woman for Animal Control) you can both let her know that you've found a cat, and ask what to do with it.

Did you call the number on the tag using your cell phone? If so, do you still have that number saved in your recent calls menu?

Something you've probably already thought of, but it might be worth a try. :-)

Also, I got my stray over seven years ago now, and I don't remember which shelter he came from, but I know they were affiliated with Winter Hill Vet clinic - 617-623-5075

Good luck!

Love your icon. Grey cats are the best!

In most cases, if the cat seems well fed and cared for, you should just let it outside and it'll get home on its own. With the recent increase in roaming rats from various construction projects, we all need more cats outside.

We need fewer pets coming into contact with other diseased or aggressive animals, rat poison, parasites, sadistic humans, and cars...and fewer un-fixed cats contributing to the feral cat population, which can be a big rabies vector.

(Please keep your cats indoors!)

Indoor vs. in/out is a religious argument, so I don't bother entering it. I make up my own mind about my own cats & local situation. However, for the city vs. country/suburbs thing, seems to me a trade-off - the cars move way slower around my house here compared to rural northern NH or suburban western CT, and there are way fewer on our street than where we lived in CT, and I don't worry about coyotes, traded off against the risk from the human population.

I did microchip my youngest cat. I don't know what the odds are that the cat you found has been chipped (probably not high), but it might be worth a scan.

Indoors vs. outdoors may be religious among cat owners, but those of us out there who don't care for other peoples' pets defecating on our property, or don't like entertaining the idea of a rapidly growing feral cat colony in an urban area getting rabies, would appreciate your consideration as well. :)

Most animal rescues will no longer adopt out cats to people who say that they will let their cats roam free.

There is no animal shelter in Somerville anymore...they packed up and moved out a while ago....just FYI.

Somerville Animal Control tries to place friendly cats & dogs to the best of their ability. Check out the website here....it offers lots of information....

Why did you think the cat was lost initially?

I saw the same cat, sans tags. She tried to follow me in but I had to tell her no.
