Tonight I saw a lot of people inside Taipei Tokyo, where China Sun used to be, across from the Somerville Theatre. It was a private party. The restaurant was not yet open to the public, but will be tomorrow, according to the woman who handed me a take-out menu.

The menu looks like your usual Chinese take-out, plus a sushi and makimono* menu. The Chinese and Japanese parts of the menu seem to be separate, rather than some attempt at fusion. Some folks here earlier speculated the restaurant might be affiliated with other places called 'Taipei Tokyo' in other cities, but I see no evidence of that on the menu.

* (What is makimono? The definitions I find online are all about a scroll of writing, not food.)

makimono is just rolled sushi. sometimes it's just labeled as maki.

i really don't care about affiliations or not as long as their lemon chicken is the same as it was when it was china sun. that stuff was like crack. delicious, lemony crack.

Makimono = maki = sushi in roll form (as opposed to nigri or sashimi)

The restaurant looks very nice inside. A definite upgrade in decor over China Sun. I hope the food is just as good.

So we go from having no sushi in the square to having two places. Assuming the one where Contessa was actually opens.

But I hope the wonton soup is the same. I loved the wonton soup at China Sun...*sigh*

Even if this place isn't affiliated with the one in Northampton (MA), it will still bring me happy feelings of my college days. :)

It is; I asked the a new-owner (he was installing his own woodwork a few weeks ago) and then also spoke to the Noho branch when I was out there. It's the same family; these are cousins. There's also a branch somewhere in NH, apparently.

My wife and I ate there on opening night. In my opinion, it's the best Chinese food in the vicinity of Davis. We didn't try any of the Japanese or Thai options, but we'll definitely be back.

I never went to China Sun - did it not offer a dining area like Taipei Tokyo does?
