Fire at Szechuan Bay (by Teele Square)

Earlier this evening, a fire broke out at Szechuan Bay restaurant on Broadway between Teele and Rt 16. It appears to have spread south-ish into Wicked Coffee and the salon. The establishments on the other side (Guru, the Indian grocery, etc) did not appear to be affected, but they are all closed right now while the fire department is dealing with the situation.

I expect SB will be closed for some time, possibly the coffee shop as well. Hopefully if the building is okay, the grocery and Guru will be open again very soon.

It doesn't look like anyone was hurt, thank goodness.

This is totally unrelated, but I just noticed your icon -- it's of Waterfire in Providence, yes? Are you from there? (I lived in Providence for 5 years and volunteered at Waterfire for awhile.)

It is, indeed. I lived in Providence for five years (back in the 90s when I was at Brown) too and was there when Waterfire began. I volunteer periodically -- that picture is from one of my fireboat gigs from the summer before last. (This is me (in the middle) on Phoebus (http://www.toaster.net/~peace/waterfire/phoebus1.jpg).)

Anyhow, that sucks, those guys work so hard trying to get the biz up. I hope they were insured and it all works out for them.

And of course I share everyone's concern about the fire. I used to live right around the corner, so I know the area well and I'm really sorry to hear about their loss.

It was quite surreal, since I'd just been out there an hour or two earlier and everything was fine (then I realized I'd forgotten the hing, so had to go back). I chat with the folks who run those places regularly and all of them have always been particularly nice so my desire for everything to be okay is much higher than default.

(That said, I don't see the problem with an off-topic comment.)

Off-topic comments might actually lead to people forming closer relationships based on something other than the designated purpose of the community, and we can't have that now, can we? I mean, it's like the other day I was in the Square listening to some guy playing music, and before I knew it, this total stranger complimented me on my t-shirt and asked where I got it, and things got totally out of control! Among other things, it turns out we share the same burning passion for esoteric West Coast fashion! Which has nothing at all to do with Davis Square or even the guy playing music! I feel so ashamed; I'd better just cancel our upcoming coffee date.
