Anywhere near Davis I can buy a kosher sausage (like a summer sausage, or hillshire farms beefstick; something that travels?)

I'm sure I can find things in Brookline but I'm trying to avoid the trip this week. Thanks!

Heh heh heh m heh, "beefstick", heh heh m heh...

In all seriousness, I'd poke around DTX or near Haymarket if that's convenient for you. At the very least I know I've seen summer sausage over at the Haymarket produce area.

Have you tried Dave's Fresh Pasta, or Sesso's? They might have an Italian version of what you're looking for.

Did you call MacKinnon's right in Davis? No idea if they have kosher meat, but they are a good butcher and maybe can hook you up.

Trader Joe's has some kosher meat. Not Davis Square, but closer than Brookline.

Not that I've ever seen, and trust me, I'd have noticed. The best you're like to find is probably a Hebrew National salami from the Shaws in Porter.

Try the Butcherie on Harvard Street. If they don't have it, they'll know where to send you probably. But they're you're best bet.

I second that. The Butcherie (now that Beacon Kosher is dead) is the only place that everyone will trust, Meg. Not sure who you're cooking for, but that's the place to go.

what happened to Beacon Kosher. I just drove by a few days ago and it's gone!

I think what I heard was that the owner of Beacon Kosher died, and the Butcherie talked about buying it, but decided not to. So that's, like, the repetition of a rumor of what might've happened, but that's all I know.

We used to say we'd trust any place with a heksher, until Hebrew National started showing the ad campaign recently of "our beef is better! it's kosher, so it only comes from the front end of the cow! not the butt!"

That was the point at which we just couldn't stomach the idea. Hebrew National clearly has no idea what kosher means. Not that we'd bought their stuff for the past several years -- we eat meat rarely, and usually go into Brookline for it -- but ... that was a clear line in the sand. So now our household no longer accepts all hekshers. Kinda sad.

There's always been unease in some quarters about Hebrew National as for a long time they were self-certifying, i.e. without independent kosher inspection. I believe that's changed, but I know some people still don't trust them (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hebrew_National). It's kosher enough for me and my kids do like their hot dogs (although veggie dogs go over almost as well, it's really about the ketchup; then we can have ice cream for dessert; only the healthiest for my kids :). Their advertising, though, is clearly aimed at the non-jewish market because the Jews don't really have much choice; there aren't any other mass-market kosher meats that you'll regularly find in an standard supermarket.

Shaws in Porter Sq carries kosher chicken and some meat (Aaron's brand), but I doubt kosher sausage. You may be stuck going to Brookline for that.

Maybe Harvest Coop or Whole Foods? Not Davis, but at least on the Red Line.

Trader Joe's on Memorial Drive sometimes has Hebrew National salamis, but they're out of them right now.
