Howdy all. I have some friends in the Davis Square area that just had a new baby. Yay! I'm looking for advice for what to do so they can get a break from having to cook.

Perhaps a place in the area that will deliver prepared comfort food to them that they can even stick in the freezer for later?

Or a restaurant in the area that has gift certificates *and* delivery (and you can use them together)?

I'm blanking on what restaurants in Davis would make sense for this purpose and I'm not too familiar with what's around the Tufts area or Ball Sq, etc.

(I would just bring them food myself but I don't want to burden them with visitors just yet.)

Thank you in advance if you have any suggestions!

I second the Foodler suggestion. I just discovered it myself. There's a bajillion places that will deliver to Davis that I never even knew about. :-)

umpteenth on the foodler suggestion, they are brilliant. I highly recommend on the comfort food scale City Slicker cafe's meatloaf, which i get far too often.

If you wanted to deliver it yourself, Capone's which is in Union and on Mass Ave near Davis has some pre-prepared food that just neeeds heating, as does Dave's Fresh Pasta.

I would think (having been in that position before) that they would be quite happy to see you if you came bearing food and saying "I'm not going to stay, I just wanted to drop this off." Something from Dave's or similar, like a lasagna or such that just needs to be heated, would be ideal. Petsi's Pies (possibly spelled wrong) on Beacon Street near Porter Square is also great -- a bit pricey, but they make savory entree pies that can just be tossed in the oven/microwave to heat up. Or you could just whip up a large batch of mac-n-cheese and bring it by, etc.

this is what you do!

Chlaal has it right. (and you spelled Petsi's just fine)

This past spring, when our baby was new, we ate at least one meal a day from the prepared food case at Pemberton Farms. (In fact I'm eating a sandwich from there right now!) But, we live about a block from them, so it was no problem for my husband to scoot out and grab something.

How about Redbones? Several of their apps/sides are comfort food, and maybe they'd like a couple of half chickens.

Oh, and I just remembered. Easy-to-eat, nutritious snacks are really important. Especially if the mother is breastfeeding the baby - then she'll need non-crumbly snacks she can eat one-handed. (I've gotten really good at opening Clif Bars with my teeth.) Maybe you could drop off a bag o' snacks?

Aw, man, I would have fallen madly in love with anyone who brought my delivery Redbones postpartum.[*] (c-section = huh, where did all my blood go? = iron is the bomb! Also of course I basically couldn't leave the sofa, so people who brought me food = my heroes.)

[*] In love but not, like, so in love that I would've had their babies. You know.

As someone with 2 young kids, I agree that it's probably not a big deal if you drop stuff off. Most people like to show off their new babies! I also don't think delivery is required if they live locally, as long as the restaurant offers take-out. They'll be going for plenty of 'stroller' walks to get the baby to sleep. A gift certificate to Dave's Pasta or Pemberton Market would be great. Frozen food is fine, unless they don't have much freezer space, or requires an oven in 90+ degree weather. Snacks would be great too.

there's a new place that opened up on Mass Ave a couple blocks north of pemberton's that specializes in frozen gourmet entries. i forget the name, its something like capote or capybara, i forget what. but they'd likely fit. i'm sure someone here can correct me on the name.

Capone's! Actually, the family that runs the store has a new baby too. Guess they didn't have to go far for their frozen lasagnas.
