Meetup?

Today I met [livejournal.com profile] ron_newman to see a marching band, and we had a lot of fun (I, for one, learned a LOT about Davis that I never would have known otherwise, and Ron tolerated my rantings about Warner Home Video with good humor.) He mentioned the idea of having a Davis Square meetup in the course of our discussions

It's up to the mods, of course, but I think this is a great idea. I know [livejournal.com profile] b0st0n has '90s Night as their unofficial "come out and meet the folks behind the icons", but that's in Allston and involves, as far as I can tell from attendees, copious amounts of booze. While I'm all for that, I understand some folks might not be. :-)

This could be pretty simple, just meet in front of J.P. Licks or something along those lines, or at a nearby-ish establishment that serves food and drink. How about it, folks, any interest?

I'm a moderator, but it's really not up to us, it's up to all of you. I'd love to see this happen.

I think it'd be pretty damn cool.

I work some pretty weird hours, so something like Saturday afternoon - show up anytime between 4 & 6pm would work best for me...

(I've got the afternoon/evening shift - til 10pm - Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays at the Million Year Picnic in Harvard Square. Other days I do freelance work; evenings are for the SO and friends).

Ya mean most people don't read LJ at 1am Saturday night/Sunday morning?

Weird.

Sounds like a good time, and if anyone is looking to meet a fat single chick, even better!

Hey, I'm single, too. Maybe we should do a <lj comm="davis_square" SpeedDating Meet&Greet! ;)

this week is poor for me (we're moving at the end of the week to a place chosen because it is walkable to Central Square for my roommate for work (2 miles) and walkable to Davis for me for socializing (.8 miles). We obviously consider different things walkable.

I would really love a new Davis event to give a whirl to. I would *also* respectfully ask that it not be at Diesel. Not that anything is at *all* wrong with Diesel. It's just....well, EVERYTHING is at Diesel. On the other hand, I have noticed that once the dinner rush is gone at Anna's, and before the 'I was drinking and should eat before I sleep' rush happens, it's often quite empty, from 7-9.

I work at Pandemonium Wednesday nights and Saturday afternoons; otherwise I freelance for time issues.

i'm down for some meeting and greeting. wednesday nights are bad, the weekend of the first is bad. Other than that if its after seven or on a weekend i'm in

That could be fun. Would be nice if it were outside while the weather still permits, instead of needing to wrangle over where to best put it. I personally favor ice cream in the plaza over a meal-type restaurant (even burritos, esp since Anna's really don't do anything for me).

Sounds marvellous, though I might suggest NOT doing it on Labor Day weekend. Too many people busy moving!

Next weekend is right out with the amount of people moving but besides that any night after 8 or any time on the weekend rocks.

Saturdays are good for me. I agree with the poster who respectfully requests we NOT meet at Diesel. Ice cream is even better. Labor Day weekend is out for me.

I like all of this -- the playground, a weekend morning while it's still nice out. Someone should bring name tags.

By the way, this other meetup is happening on Sunday afternoon, September 23, a few blocks from Davis Square. It's starting to mushroom out of control as people are planning to arrive at a tiny park from all over the US and beyond.

Sounds like a lovely idea! You don't need mod approval though -- go right ahead and plan something. Hopefully I'll be available to join in. :-)

I can't commit to any particular time in advance, but just want to suggest that you listen to what folks say, but then go ahead and schedule it any time you please. No matter what, some people will come and most people won't (even of those who say a particular time works in general). If it spurs on other people doing this to accomodate other schedules, all's the better.

I think a venue where people don't feel obligated to spend more would be nice and personally lean towards anything outside.

(Also, I'll just repeat that the mods are irrelevant to this, but I think you have all of our approvals, anyway. :)

Not Labor Day weekend -- a lot of folks will likely be out of town. (And I have a Red Sox ticket for next Saturday afternoon.) Also, Saturday 9/22 is a bad idea for some of us because it's Yom Kippur.

In Somerville we've got Temple B'nai Brith (my shul, on Winter Hill) and Havurat Shalom (on College Ave near Powderhouse). Further discussion of this topic should probably go into a separate post.

I tried to go to the last time people were getting together, (it was at Diesel) and I never could find anyone. I'm out of touch for the next month, but as a friendly suggestion you might want to post some kind of small signage or have a point person looking out for new faces. It was pretty discouraging to hit Diesel and not be able to pick out the LJ crew from oh, everyone else there.

I don't want to meet any of you unless copious amounts of booze is involved. And i don't want to meet anyone opposed to that scenario anyhow, so it works out doubly :)

Booze and copious booze...what about the back room of the burren?

I think it's $300 for 4 hours. It's a fabulous place to do an event. I had a great experience renting it out, myself.

How about the Burren

Why not just all meet at the Burren during the day - on a weekday - and just get all lumped up!

It's really loud in there. The few times I've been there for groups of more than about 5 or 6 people trying to meet, nobody could hear each other. Even when it's not full, it seems like the acoustics there make it very hard for not-small groups.
