This Saturday, the ever-enthusiastic Pagan Kennedy is hosting a pay-what-you-can fund-raiser for Fred Berman, who is running for Alderman at Large in Somerville. It's at her apple-happy home near Davis Square. I will be performing as the Singing Psychologist. For those who haven't seen it, it's a schtick wherein I solicit personal problems from audience members. Then a musician and I write a song on the spot to solve them.

The Over-Intellectualized Circus, Extreme Apple-Picking Contest, Freudian Analysis Fest and Cupcake Kickoff -September 8th in Kevin and Pagan's backyard, 164 Hudson St., Somerville. 617 666 2274. (If it rains we will move inside.)

- Hanging out starts at 3; entertainment commences at about 5 pm or so

EXPERIENCE the thrill of a newly invented sport that's sweeping the local-food and organic-farming community: EXXXXTREME APPLE PICKING! Yes, in our very own backyard, you will have the chance to dangle twenty feet in the air in pursuit of edible apples that you can take home with you. We will provide tools and protective headgear.

WATCH Steve Almond, bestselling author and candy freak, as he MCs the festivities and and dishes about how he refused to be a part of Oprah Winfrey's Book List. (Even more daring, he turned down Oprah in the face of her overwhelming indifference!)

BE ANALYZED by the amazing Jenny G, who takes questions from the audience about romantic, ethical, emotional and artistic problems; Jenny improvises Freud-style therapy in the form of a jazz-blues song. In rhyme!

SING your favorite tune from the 1980s on a Karaoke system that will be available to the brave and hearty!

LISTEN to the achy-breaky left-wing song stylings of Somerville's own Alastair Moock -- who happens to be George Carlin's favorite folkie!

GET A SNEAK PREVIEW of the sweets that will be available at Davis Square's soon-to-be-opening sugar shack, Kickass Cupcakes.

fred berman RULES! for real. I am going to try to go to this. I hope it's pay-what-you-can because I'm totally broke. I am, however, contributing my time door-knocking for Fred tomorrow. people, if you knew how much fred berman ruled you would be doing it too.

The last time I went to a fundraiser at Pagan's, it was definitely pay what you can; I am sure folks would love to have you be there!

I'll try to be there, but I wish this wasn't at the exact same time as Project SUM: Sculpture Under McGrath
