Continuing a tradition almost a decade strong, Redbones BBQ will be grilling local veggies for a good cause this Wednesday, September 12th at the Davis Square market in Somerville.

Come on by from 12 - 5:30pm to pick up a hearty and healthy serving of vegetables grown by our farmers and flavored deliciously by the chefs of Redbones. You can also grab an ear or two of grilled corn and a glass of Redbones' famous lemonade.

The prices are low ($6 for the whole package), the food delicious, and all the proceeds will benefit the Federation of Mass. Farmers' Markets, the non-profit which brings you the Davis Square market and which supports the over 130 markets state-wide.

So grab a friend or two, and plan to have lunch, dinner, or an afternoon snack at the Davis market on Wednesday, September 12th!

You would raise even more funds if you kept it open later so that those of us (many!) who work outside of Davis could come after work. I don't even get out of work until 5:30.

true, that. I've never quite understood why weekday markets in an urban setting run in the middle of the day. If I'm working near them my option is 'have a bag of food under my desk for the rest of the day'. But more often than not, I'm simply not able to take time in the middle of the day to shop. Especially in an area like Davis, it would simply make more sense to run a market from mid afternoon to 7 instead.

In Canada, I was always a very big supporter of farmer's markets, but they always went on Saturday mornings, or much earlier; ie, they ran from 6-11am, so you would go before work, instead. This starting after office hours starts and stopping before or close to them ending doesn't fit well with how most in-city people need to operate.

I wonder if the Davis market ends this early because the farmers just want to go home. In any event, if you want a Saturday morning farmer's market, try Union Square.

I must ask the Davis Oracle, what is the fastest way to get to Union Square from Davis by bus? Is it the 87?

87 goes directly to Union Square. 88 will drop you a few blocks away, at the corner of McGrath Highway and Washington Street. Get either one in front of Dunkin Donuts.

Agreed. It seems like it's still on the family template that would have an at-home adult, usually the mother, who was free to do daytime marketing. Nowadays, in many households all adults have to work outside the home, and no one is free to go to a weekday daytime market.

I have this same complaint about the hours kept by delivery, repair, and utilities services. It presumes someone is always home in the daytime. Life's just not like that anymore, for most.

Actually, there's a company trying to address this: www.inseason.us . They run a mini-farmstand with a selection of produce and other farm products outside the Porter Square T station on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 4-8 pm.

I "third" a plea for a slightly later end time. I would SO fork over $6 for grilled veggies. Any hope of extending to 6:30? Or 7? I undertand tired farmers. Can they leave their good stuffs with the grill masters to grill into the post-work time?

My wife works on a farm and sometimes mans a farm stand, and so based on that limited exposure to farm scheduling, I'd say that farm stands can't start too early because the farmers are either a) busy harvesting the vegetables to be sold at the farm stand first thing in the morning, or b) driving in to the city that morning from those faraway places where farms still exist. And they can't work too late because, well damn, they got up so early to harvest the vegetables or drive in from faraway places that they're bone tired by 4:00. So why not just start the whole process later in the day? Farmers and vegetables prefer the cool of the morning. So why not have the Davis market on a Saturday? Maybe because the farmers are down in Union that day?

There's a reason people think super markets are so super. If you likes the farm stands, you gots to roll with the farmers.

Then I don't want to hear about how I'd be a better person if I supported them. I'm more than happy - thrilled, even - to give my money to local farmers directly. But this particular farmers market might as well be on the moon.

might as well...

I am intrigued by this "moon market" of which you speak...if you'll merely provide coordinates, my companions and I will program the DirectTron of our Space Dirigible and sally forth.

For reals, though, the DS day market on Weds. is just about perfect for any student in the area who has some open space in the day. I think they're a compelling audience for the kinds of true food a market presents: get 'em while they's young. Just because I cannot make it (because I work in the day and have those attendant disadvantages, as roundly recognized and pointed out above) doesn't make it useless. Additionally, I hit the Copley market on Tuesdays and Fridays and I do (as was also brought up above) sit with my veggies at my desk for the afternoon and then schlep them home on the train, because I like (as was further brought up above) to roll with the farmers.

The grilled veggies were super tasty, the lemonade fantastic.

I was amused to hear people walk up and complain about the lack of meat :)

Hi There, I am one of the two guys who started In Season - check us out at www.inseason.us (www.inseason.us). We are the small farm stand that has been selling stuff to evening commuters in front of the Porter Square T Stop. At the end of October we will be expanding our food offerings - adding (local) meat, dairy, eggs, fresh pasta, bread as well as any and all locally grown stuff that is available right through the winter. We will also be switching from the point of sale format to a weekly no-commitment "Buyer's Club". If you are interested and want to learn more please visit our website and sign up for the club! And either way, Eat Local!
