Sometime in the past...I dunno...year to 18 months or so, I saw a band mentioned on the live music calendar at Johnny D's. It was on a day I couldn't be there, and I can't remember why, or I'd probably know WHEN it was. Anyway, the write-up compared this band's stuff to Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, and other generally amazing musicians. I even looked them up online and perused their website a few times.

Now, I cannot for the LIFE of me remember who they were.

I blogged about it, but examining my memories and archives hasn't turned up the post. Even though I enabled search engine searching of my journal, LJSeek isn't recognizing that yet.

The band is, I believe, from the NY area. They are fronted by a man. I think the name of the band is of the format "So-and-so and his something-or-other", and I think that the so-and-so in the name is NOT the name of the guy in the band. I could be wrong about this stuff, but then again, I could be right.

Johnny D's music calendars only seem to be available back to May, and it was definitely before then. I haven't seen their name on those calendars again in that time, and I'm darn sure I'd recognize it if I saw it again.

Can anyone help me out here, maybe?

EDIT: Found it! It's Spottiswoode and his Enemies. Apparently I missed another Johnny D's appearance of theirs in July. Waaah.

Can you remember anything else about the kind of music they played besides what musicians the review compared them to? The genre? Instruments? Anything like that?

I'm not sure if this would help, but you might be able to find the band listing in the web archive.

(Thanks for editing the post, but could you put the name (and maybe a link) out in the post itself, rather than buried here in the comments?)

Ah, I was just going to ask the same thing.

Hmm - maybe "Spottiswoode and His Enemies"? They're compared to Nick Cave and The Tiger Lillies in a review:

But they played just in July, so that might be too recent.

It's probably no help to point out that they have upcoming New York dates, is it?

There need to be better solutions for tracking this stuff. TourFilter makes an effort, but it's missing tons of venues.

I would SO pay for a good (and complete) service that did this.

Hmm. It's better than tourfilter, but still missed a lot of upcoming shows. Still, it might be worth a try.

Spottiswoode!

They're indeed awesome.

They're based out of D.C, though, I think, not NYC. My friend, Summervillain (http://www.summervillain.com/blurgh/), who moved here from DC and was deeply tapped into the DC music scene, knows one or more of the members of His Enemies.

I am a jackass for skipping their show in July, but I think it was the same day as ArtBeast, and I was pooped.
