I was in Davis last night on the partition between Store 24 and the square. Three cops came and started harassing the dudes drinking out of brown bags. The fat one actually broke the cap on two more bottles of liquor and poured them out on the brick. It fucking stank like whiskey something awful.

Drunk: "My brother's the chief of police!"

Cop: "Not anymore he ain't!"

((ED: That's right, 'ain't'.))

Cop: (pouring bottles) Fucking screw!

So first of all, I think the last time someone was told to 'screw' was in a speakeasy, ninety years ago.

Second, the cop basically admitted that they gave the drunk special treatment during the period in which his brother was actually the chief of police.

Third, why the fuck would they BREAK THE SEAL on large bottles of liquor and pour it all over the square? I guarantee you some poor dog got fucked up.

Lastly, why are Somerville cops such unnecessary assholes? Patience and negotiation should be fucking keystones of officer training, not the exception to the rule.

I wanted his badge number, but I was afraid of winding up on YouTube on the wrong end of a taser.

These gentlemen have routinely been in trouble. Over the course of the summer, I have witnessed the police show up three times to address them.

I actually had to call 911 myself when the two of them got in a fist fight with a third man in front of the Store 24.

My understanding is that this is a routine infraction, and so I don't blame the Somerville PD for being short with them.

No way man, I'm not touching them! Seriously, each had yanked the others' pants down, and they were roiling around in their grey tightie whities.

I don't think I've ever felt so sad, so amused, and such a need to call the cops all at the same time.

Huh. I'm not sure I've ever witnessed a fistfight between consenting adults. Usually one throws a punch and the other reacts. Neither one actually wants to be there.

And considering the emergency room bills? Yeah, I'd rather someone broke it up.

Well of course. Because the first rule of Fight Club...

All fights are by consent.

how would I know it's between "consenting adults"? Any time I see a fistfight, I'd call the cops.

a court in Attleboro claims that you cannot consent to assault and thus cannot consent to a fistfight...however, the case is not related to a fistfight and I disagree with the ruling...

Edit: I just reread who said what, and no, the Somerville PD should always follow proper procedure, no matter how annoying it is.

If you saw this, I suggest bringing it to the attention of our two local newspapers, the Journal and the News.

Without actually taking the time to verify the claim or the backstory, did you really think they thought the drunk's brother was the Chief of Police? Not with an answer like "Not anymore he ain't", which is really the funniest retort you can make to such a claim.

Well, Somerville did recently get a new police chief.

The outgoing acting police chief is Robert Bradley. The new one, who hasn't started yet, is Anthony Holloway from Clearwater, Florida.

How in the world is promoting adoption as an alternative to abortion showing 'a lack of respect' to anyone, anywhere? It doesn't. Unless, of course, you have no actual definition for the word 'respect' and instead just mean that you disagree. (And what would that disagreement be, exactly? That people shouldn't choose to give children up for adoption?)

The abortion/adoption icon is not the icon that was being complained about; the icon changed since the complaints.

I don't like that the cops broke the seal on a bottle. Must I now disguise my sealed shiraz in a baby blanket just to get it home?

Probably not, assuming that you're not getting lit with another bottle in the middle of the Square.

Yeah I was with two_stabs when we saw this. The actual exchange was:

Cop : You want to go to jail? You raise your hand to me you're going to jail.

Guy : I'm not raising my hand i mumble mumble mumble

Cop : (Pouring out drinks) Get the fuck out of here!

Guy : My brother's the chief of police

Cop : Your brother is NOT the chief of police anymore. Get the fuck out of here.

Guy : ...

Cop : SCREW!

The whole scene had a very diseased-primate sickfeel to it.

1. I hear it a lot. It's in our vernacular. So, screw.

2. Um, he admitted no such thing.

3. Because they guy was already hammered and if he'd walked into a bar or packy, he owuld have been refused service anyway. I doubt a dog got fucked up. I'm sure that a frat boy from Tufts fell face first in it after everyone in the know departed the area and lapped it up like a dog though.

Lastly, I don't see that they were being unnecessary assholes. From both accounts here, they were actually quite nice and didn't arrest the assholes for public drunkeness, disorderly conduct or anything else.

I'm sure that, had they done that, someone else would be bitching about the unnecessary waste of taxpayer dollars in arresting two relatively harmless but extremely annoying drunks. And someone else would have called the SPD unnecessary assholes who flex their power unnecessarily.

All in all, I find this whole story rather amusing.

While I certainly don't approve of obnoxious cops, just a few misbehaving drunks can ruin a public space for everyone.

I wish Central Square were more like Davis -- fewer rowdy drunks and more street musicians playing acoustic guitar.

good lord no, not if they'd be anything like the guy that plays acoustic guitar in davis! i wouldn't wish for more of him anywhere... he plays the same three songs over and over again. i really never, ever want to hear "sound of silence" again as i'm walking through the square. he needs to learn new songs.
