I'm hoping to find some over-the-top ornate, fancy pastries for an event. Something along the lines of the dessert spread in Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette. I'm hoping for pastel petit fours, perhaps some marzipan fruits, and anything else that is pretty, pretty, pretty. I'll go anywhere in the greater Boston area - within 20 miles or so. Thanks!

The best marzipan in the Greater Boston area is at Modern Pastry (http://www.modernpastry.com/index2.ivnu"). Period. I've only been to the North End store (on Hanover Street), but I see they have a location in Medford, which can't bode well for my waistline now that I know. I like their pastries as well, and while I don't know how fancy their normal ones are, I 'spect they can fancy them up to whatever you might require.

Last I drove by the Medford was was under construction; I'd say call before you visit. But their cannolis are the bomb,

They're open again. I got a cake from the Medford shop in late August.

Their desserts are very pretty, but the flavor leaves a lot to be desired. You've got many better options here than Finale.

Danish Pastry House (http://www.danishpastryhouse.com/) in Medford also has lots of yummies!

I agree. I think they also have one in Watertown? And they sometimes make these adorable marzipan "monsters" for kids, which are too perfect and cute for words.

Danish Pastry House is the king AND queen if you want marzipan.

You might try Charles Street. There are at least 3 bakeries with really fancy and delicious chocolates and pastries. There's also Mike's in the North End, though they are mostly Italian in theme.

Seconded. Delicious and gorgeous. Much better than Finale in taste and several notches above Lyndell's in sophistication.

And for great cookies, try Lakota Bakery.

Oh my god, Lakota! I used to work in an office where one of my coworkers would buy those for the senior staff meetings. And she always bought enough that there were leftovers for non-senior staff :)

yes, they are the most delicious I've found in this area- we also very much like their cakes. In my opinion, the Italian bakeries around Boston often have tasteless pastry that seems to be based on vegetable shortening or something, but these are the Real Deal- and I was lucky enough to eat such things in France and Germany as a kid.

Their pastries are *divine*. Their cakes are eh, but the pastries are all that. We use them for events at work and they are my favorite thing ever in terms of food I have the luxury of ever eating for free. So good.

Lyndell's can make you the most exquisite flower-topped cupcakes you've ever seen. Their frosting flowers are nothing like supermarket bakery flowers. They're true artistry. They had a display of them up over the summer, and every time I walked past I wished I had an occasion to order those (probably a bit expensive) creations.

The cookies at Pemberton Farms are mostly from Lakota. They are also sold at Cardullo's and at Darwin's in Cambridge.
Flour has the best-tasting of all the desserts.

The answer for this specific issue is actually

Athan's (http://www.athansbakery.com/).

They are without doubt the best source for SMALL fancy Europastries. The other options have delicious pastries, but not in tiny tea-party sizes.

Re: Athan's is yum.

And Athan's desserts are pretty reasonable priced too, considering what they are.
