If you, like me, live somewhere near Josephine Ave and are presently not asleep because of the unholy, unidentifiable noise emanating from it:

It's sewer construction.

Yes, it's sewer construction at ten thirty at night. Apparently this work cannot be done during the day because there's more sewage in the pipes.

No, the police (whom I just called because, wtf) can't tell me how long it's going to last. I can call DPW and ask them, but they're not open at 10:30 at night.

The police assure me that someone in city hall authorized this, ergo they're not going to do anything about it. I can call my alderman, which sounds like a VERY GOOD IDEA. I'm half-tempted to call him right now, but probably that's because I went to bed an hour and a half ago and am not yet asleep, which makes all sorts of socially unpleasant things sound appealing.

If you're wondering why you never got notification that bizarre noisy work would be happening in the middle of the night, gosh! So am I!

If they didn't do this work, you'd be equally upset at the result.

I'm not generally a city-services complainer, but wow! This noise is kinda shocking, particularly since I live on the next street over and am it's loud enough I can't sleep. I feel sorry for the Josephiners. (Josephinies? josephineers?)

The workers assure me that it'll be done by 6am.

Sounds like the world's largest tire being deflated. Which would be kinda cool, except, y'know, ten thirty at night!

Something like this happened on Somerville Ave. a few months ago, and we got one of those Tom Champion calls ("Hello, this is Tom Champion from the City of Somerville. There will be overnight sewer construction on Somerville Ave..."). I'm surprised you didn't get one. Do you have an answering machine?

Yup, we got notifications, including a warning that there'd be "nighttime light and noise" this week. The letter we've got sitting on our dining room table doesn't seem to be more specific about timing than that, though.

If I were not already married I think I would want to marry TOM CHAMPION, who I am convinced is a superhero the town has hired. His superpower is sounding awesome on voicemail.

Are you on a landline? Many renters in this day and age don't have them.

Reminds me of the jackhammers making noise at 7am last Friday on Westminster St. After a late night Thursday I didn't appreciate it.

Tom Champion, who is one of my personal heroes, calls my landline. I am a paranoid weirdo, having lived through 9/11 and the 2003 blackout in New York, and insist on having a landline. But yeah, he'll call your cell if you want. You just have to sign up.

I got a robo-call from Tom Champion (I live on Willow). Don't remember anything about noise at night, but they are lifting resident-only parking restrictions on Kidder and (Morrison?) so that people on Josephine and Rogers will have someplace to park. The work is supposed to last until December.

Well, maybe YOU should call Tom Champion (turn the tables!) and suggest that this kind of thing be added to his list.

you can sign up any phone number (cell, whatever, we have our VOIP number on the list) for the automatic notifications list.

form to sign up is here (http://crm.4gov.net/SOMERVILLEMA/_cs/SupportSrvRqstOpen.aspx?ssessionid=&rqst=103)

We got a robocall about this a few days ago, warning about parking restrictions and overnight sewer work tonight (and yes, they specifically mentioned Tuesday night, so it sounds like there's at least hope it will only be for tonight).
We're near Pearson, which is also having some work done, but not, I think, the noisy mess that's on Josephine.
ugh, I can imagine this sux, especially for people with kids! (I've got friends on Josephine with a 4-year-old, I can only imagine what must be going on over there . . .)

I thought it was staffed 24/7, but I've never tried calling it at this hour.

someone needs to put that in the general community info. That's keen info to know.

I called it 2 weeks ago on a Saturday at almost midnight and it was staffed. Maybe they were taking a bathroom break.

I might, except that I can't find the form for cancelling the robocalls if you decide you don't want them anymore (or are moving away, etc.)

Is there a way to get them to only email you the notifications?

Wondering when this will come to my street, which is right by. Wah. My sleep is interrupted by other noises enough as it is without the city scheduling something all night. Maybe I'll actually get warning and be able to arrange to stay with friends when it comes to me.

We did too. . .

. . . and then one of our guests got ticketed for resident parking today on Kidder anyway. Now, we've got to help them protest the ticket. Nice, huh?

Construction on Pearson Ave starts at 7:30 am. The city was really good this time with notification letters, both sent via post as well as left on doorsteps.

I talked to one of the construction guys last night. He said he thought there was some kind of vote, that the neighborhood *wanted* it done at night. I'm Rogers, not Josephine, but that was what you call news to me.
