Is there a towing company in the area that you'd recommend? I know I could call AAA, but if I understand correctly they will just tow me to the nearest garage. I want to go to a garage of my choosing, a little farther away. Any advice?
It's been a long time since I owned a car and was a member of AAA, but .... do you have the "AAA Plus" level of membership? I think that gets you longer tows, to a place of your choice.
Basic AAA will tow you to the nearest AAA-approved repair facility free of charge; if you specify another destination, even if it's another repair shop, your tow will be considered a "tow of convenience" and you'll only be covered for the first 3 miles; additional miles will be charged by AAA (I think Southern New England AAA charges $3.00 for each additional mile.)
AAA Plus will cover you for a tow anywhere within 100 miles of the location of your vehicle's disablement.
AAA will tow you for "free" for the first three miles, and after that they charge you a nominal amount per additional mile. I was recently towed and had to pay $2, I think, for that one extra mile. But the bottom line is: you can definitely choose where you want to be towed, so unless you're being towed a long distance it's still cheaper to call AAA.
AAA will tow you to the garage of your choosing within the tow radius, which is, I believe, 3 miles for regular membership. Also, you can always pay the guy to take you further if you want to.
