Italian classes near Davis
Oct. 15th, 2007 03:34 pmHey all,
I'm a bit of a language junkie and have been trying to find a good place to start learning Italian lately. Does anybody have suggestions other than CCAE and BCAE? I haven't had the best experiences in the past with language courses there.
I discovered a website for a place in North Cambridge called Domus Italica that initially sounded promising, but their domain registration expired over the weekend and I've gotten no response to e-mails, so I'm thinking they're defunct.
Somerville seems to have such a big Italian community -- surely there must be some local oganization that offers courses in the language? If only the university I work for offered Italian classes at times when I'm not, well, working!
All suggestions appreciated!

Date: 2007-10-15 08:09 pm (UTC)No small groups running now, but if you want to get one together then it's cheaper per person, depending on how many people are in the group. We'd have to find a space for it; my house would probly be available, but not multiple times a week.

Date: 2007-10-16 08:05 pm (UTC)A month and a half to two months of studying the language twice a week would get you pretty far. The Cambridge Adult Ed classes run an hour and a half once a week for ten weeks. (That's the French; they're not offering Italian right now.)
I'd be open for doing it Monday and Wednesday, Monday and Thursday, or Tuesday and Thursday. What with the holiday season approaching, I figure people wouldn't make it to weekend classes much. It'd be a relaxed affair, with food and coffee/tea and stuff.
Of course, we'd need to find space too. :) I can see about swinging once a week at my place; living with six other people, though we have the space, I'd need to get their consent. I live a 5-7 min walk from Davis. Others are welcome to suggest places for a second weekly session. Feel free to email me: vika-wordsend,org (change punctuation).

Date: 2007-10-15 10:02 pm (UTC)1) Harvard Extension classes are in general very cheap for college credits, but they vary and they're not as cheap as adult ed classes (although they might be per unit knowledge conveyed);
2) People's experiences with them vary a lot. I had a great experience with Latin, but I know some people who had a bad experience with German. Depends a lot on the instructor, so I'd try to find out whatever you can about the class in advance, and see if it's refundable if you go to day 1 and hate it.
