Cedar St closed Wednesday 10/17 - Morrison to Alpine

Cedar Street will be closed on Wednesday, October 17, from Morrison Ave. to Alpine Street, from 9 am to "no later than 4 pm". The closure will allow a city contractor to remove embedded railroad tracks and repave this part of the street.

Does this have anything to do with the bike path extension? Something tells me that cars will now drive faster down Cedar st.

Sort of. Some time next year, the MaxPak developers will remove the remainder of the track from Cedar Street to Somerville Junction (just beyond Lowell Street, where it joins the Lowell commuter rail line). After removing the track, they will build a temporary construction road, which they will use for a year or so. Then they'll remove their road, and the bike path can be extended.

Hmm. In the "re-elect me" mailer from Curtatone, he listed extension of the bike path as a "fall 2007" project. It sounds like it's not actually going to be extended (at least for public use) for a year and a half or two years. That's too bad. We were getting psyched about it.

The path will be 'extended' within a year, but not in the obvious way. The next part to be built will be from Central Street west to Centre and Woodbine Streets, where the city is also building a small park. This will be a disconnected section until MaxPak finishes using their temporary construction road, and until some more Green Line planning occurs.

Huh, I thought I had subscribed to Tom Champion, but no voicemail for me. I'd have assumed the city just thought I don't live quite close enough to Cedar to care, but I know I live closer to Cedar than you do. Is there some special secret *real* place to sign up for Tom Champion and I just signed up for the fake news?

One of the things I found out (I had an extended fiasco relating to Josephine road construction, way more than I posted about, and ended up talking to a lot of city people) is that they only actually connect on 70ish% of the Tom Champion calls. If they don't connect they'll try your number again a few times, but there's a limit. Also, if they call and you pick up in the middle of the message, it will reset to play it from the beginning, but there's a 7-second delay, during which time you may have hung up the phone.

Upshot: there are ways to be on the list but not get a call, so you can increase your chances by subscribing multiple phones or signing up for email.

Will they take down that old rusty falling-apart railroad crossing signal too? It's always amused me how, when the Community Path was built, they removed the rails precisely up to the edge of the sidewalk and no further.

I sorta like having that crossing sign, as a reminder of what used to be here. If they remove it, maybe they can save it and erect it again somewhere on the path extension?

I guess the answer is "no", because they took out the rails and repaved the road today, but left the old railroad-crossing sign in place.
