The Wild Oats in Medford, near Tufts/Rt. 16, is closing at the end of the month for its renovation into a Whole Foods. Right now, every single item in the store is 40 percent off.
Is that true? When I was there today, I asked a cashier if Whole Foods was keeping on the Wild Oats employees. The cashier said that the Wild Oats people could apply for jobs at WF. (She didn't sound very happy about the whole thing, so I didn't continue the line of questioning.)
There's lots of good stuff left, but the store was very crowded. Employees were restocking the shelves, but not as fast as customers were buying. It's hard to know how much stuff they have in the back, but the best stuff will probably be gone in a few days, even though they are open until the end of the month.
thanks. I live right near there, so I'll try to brave it on my drive home from work today. Possibly the worst time to go, but what do I have to lose but time?
The last time I talked to folks there, the WFM thing had been quashed and nobody knew of any further plan, but that was a couple of months ago. I haven't been shopping much lately because of my farm share and the farmer's markets, so I really appreciate your passing this on. :)
Damn - they were the only place I trusted to refill my own water jugs. I worry too much about what vandals might decide to do to the dispensers on the ones in parking lots, let alone the state of their holding tanks.
Oh YAY! Sorry to disagree with everyone, but I was completely expecting they'd close it entirely with the merger. A Whole Foods there would be awesome -- I find I can never find everything I need at Wild Oats, but I can at WF. And it's the only grocery I can walk to.
I was just there (5pm) and many things are sold out... Especially some of the things I was really hoping for when I heard this, like Stirrings mixers and chicken broth (random, I know). I'm going to go back in the hopes that they've restocked.
I was in there today, and in general, there is less than there was yesterday. But some items that were not there yesterday were there today. And I saw several vendors restocking some of the shelves this morning. I don't know how much longer they will be taking deliveries. The meat section is cleaned out. The dairy section is 1/4 of its former size. The produce section is about 1/4 of what it was. They have lots of apples. There are chips, salsa, frozen foods, crocs, teas, vitamin/health store type stuff, hummus in three places, some dairy, some produce, some cookies/breads, lots of chocolate and candy, apple juice everywhere. The pickings are becomming slimmer and slimmer, but there are some good bargains left. However, I wouldn't count on finding anything specific. It's pretty hit or miss at this point.

Date: 2007-10-16 06:27 pm (UTC)Whole Foods is not necessarily cheaper, but they have cheaper options that wild oats just doesn't have.
