I was walking by the x-rental car place (name...?) next to the Rosebud and wondered what might become of it and thought wouldn't it be really great if...there was a DANCE there - like swing or maybe even SQUARE DANCING with a not too loud live band and little tables around the perimeter, strings of little twinkly lights along the fence. Just really casual and village-like and fun.

If I was on the planning board things would be a tad different around here ;-)

It was Enterprise...

if that was the platform with which you campaigned for the planning board, you'd have my vote

A dance venue would be wonderful... GOOD Plus-level square dancing can be had every Tuesday @MIT, with Tech Squares.

Just sayin'. :)

Keep in mind that "plus-level" means you're only allowed to dance if you've completed an approved plus-level Modern Western Square Dancing course.

Well, since it is currently vacant and abandoned, and you are proposing an outdoor activity, my advice is ... just do it. Make it happen.

But do it quickly, as soon it will be too cold for this.

there are about a billion swing dancers who live in the davis area, many of them the organizers of some of the biggest local swing events (e.g. swinging in copley square in the summer). if you go to havetodance.com and e-mail benson (the guy who runs the site), he can probably point you in the right direction, and you can float the idea by some folks who have experience organizing this kind of thing.

I have a great idea. Let's put in a hair salon for women and have scantily clad men in Speedos cutting our hair?!

What d'ya think?! It's brilliant, right?!

I'd settle for men in mini-skirts. Nothin' shows off a fine pair of legs like a mini-skirt.

What about men in kilts? I know a cute one who works at Sunset ;)

I know him too! He and my boyfriend have conversed about kilts while we were there for dinner! :)

Hmm. How short a kilt are we talking about? Cause my SO has occasionally tried on Utilikilts, but he's always looking at the knee-length styles. Bah.

I like the kilt idea, and I love a nice pair of legs on a man. Rawrrrr.

But what for a name? Kut 'n Kilt? With enough glottal stops women go wild for the accent, and from it spawns kilt fever. It could be parlayed into a sister store...oh, I know! ....a Scottish Burrito joint in the old Dahn Yoga place! ;-)

Nah, you know what the Square could *really* use? Some burritos.

Seriously, a swing dance would be cool.

I know, I was in the square today standing on Elm just wishing there was somewhere for a burrito. *sigh* Maybe someday....

I'm thinking of opening a little boutique wrap place called Kickass Burritos. Do you think people will pay $9 for a two-bite burrito if I act edgy and hip enough?

If they don't, it's just because they're not hep to your burrito philosophy. And because they're MEAN!!1!

An outdoor dance space is an interesting idea, to say the least! Although I think there's a definite distinction between 'vacant' and 'abandoned'. So if this is a serious discussion, might I suggest you begin by approaching the owner of the property? He's not hard to find in the area....his name is Poutahides and he also owns the block of stores that housed the now-defunct Alex Pizza, as well as the condos on the corner of Willow and Morrison. He was at that site yesterday afternoon.
FWIW.....there was a huge 'Curtatone' banner on the former Enterprise lot, but it seems to have disappeared.....hmmmmmm

I LOVE this idea. Honkfest demonstrated that Davis Square is a friendly place for public dancing -- and I think that as long as the music wasn't too loud, it would be fine.

Please keep us posted if you -- or another commenter -- decides to start organizing something. I can't offer to organize, but I can offer to help string lights & publicize & participate!
