Wasn't the day for me to take the motorcycle to work, I guess. Tonight's ride home should be interesting.

I brought my Bandit 1200S home from the dealer in Nashua to my apartment in Malden in pouring-down rain. Biggest, heaviest, most powerful bike I'd ever ridden, first bike with (breakable!) plastics, zero miles on the odometer. Round about this time of year, too, so it was dark out. Totally scared I was going to wreck.

eh, i didn't find it to be too bad. not like some weather last year that had me blowing across lanes of Storrow Drive...

heh. there was the vacation I took on my Bandit 1200 this summer...six days through northern PA and the Southern Tier of NY State and I got rained on for four of 'em. Including one day I spent marooned in Glens Falls NY because it was Just. That. Soggy.

or the time I came home late one night from work last January, when it was just beginning to snow. (I have a heated vest, and I'm going to get me a set of heated gloves before it gets much later in the year.)

DOESN'T THE NATIONAL - ahem - doesn't the National Weather Service know it's impolite to yell on the Internet?

:p

whoa.

i've always been curious -- i'm a reporter and at an old job we got our weather news off a feed from them and it was always ALL CAPS and it made me bonkers.

*the more you know*

some perl guru more adept than I could probably come up with a script to pipe that to to give it more or less correct case.

Instead of Perl just use Ruby, and then you do this:

puts nws_message.capitalize!

wheee!

it's only hinted at in that reference, but i think the reason for the harsh character set limitations is so the message can be usefully transmitted over old teletype or rtty equipment using ITA2. (5-bit "Baudot" code: no lower case, and number digits are sent by entering a "shift" state)

watch your car doors! i've had to exhaust my arm muscles keeping them from blowing open and smashing gleefully into the cars parked next to me.
