Music Schedule Changes at Johnny D's

Maybe not surprisingly, Johnny D's has postponed the music events scheduled for tonight and tomorrow night, in favor of showing the World Series on the big screen.  Tonight's Gypsy Cimbalom Band show has been moved to Tuesday, Nov. 13 and tomorrow's Brazilian dance band Samba Tremeterra will play on Friday, Nov. 30.

The cimbalom band, incidentally, is amazing.  The leader, Calman Balogh, is generally recognized as the world's greatest player of the cimbalom, a Hungarian instrument similar to a hammered dulcimer.  If you have any interest in world music, you should try to catch them next month.

I was introduced to the cimbalom at this summer's Lowell Folk Festival. Is this the same group that performed there?

No, that was a group from Cleveland -- these musicians are from (or were born in) Hungary. Here's a bio of Kalman Balogh (corrected spelling):

The Cleveland band wasn't Harmonia (http://www.harmoniaband.com/) was it? If so I'm super bummed I missed them, since they're longtime favorites. For the record if it *was* Harmonia, they're no less authentic than Balogh, though some of them are indeed Americans.

Thanks for posting about the Balogh show - I hadn't known he was coming to Davis, and now I definitely won't want to miss it.

The Cleveland band was kind of a pick-up group put together specifically for the festival by fiddler Steven Greenman. The cimbalom player from Harmonia, Alexander Fedoriouk, was part of the group.

Kalman Balogh has previously played at the Somerville Theatre and Sanders Theatre as part of various Eastern European/Rom multi-act tours that have been presented by Cambridge's World Music.

Ok, you like cimbalom and know who Alex Fedoriouk is and you know what the word Rom means. I'm guessing there are strong odds we actually may even know each other in our offline folk music/dance lives.
