So I just got the first oil delivery of the season - $552. @ 2.89/gal. Yikes! More than gas.

I buy from the place my landlord has a service contract with so I have never shopped around. Does anyone recall the price they paid (recently) for heating oil?

sounds like your tank must have been almost completely empty (most takes are 175 gal, I believe). We usually only spend about 200-300 for the whole winter in heating oil, but we're sandwiched on the second floor and I think that helps keep the cost down.... how quickly you burn through it depends on how hot you keep your place. We only usually get one delivery a year, in February, for usually around 90-110 gal.

you may have meant per gal, huh? I'm not sure the amount, but we joined Mass Energy (formally Mass Oil Consumer Alliance) for $20/year or 3 years for $45 and you get a discount on the oil.... it's a good deal. www.massenergy.com

I have a 200 gal. tank in the place we're moving to in a couple of weeks. It's dead empty and just to get an initial delivery of 150 gallons (the minimum), it will run us between 300 - 350.

So, it sounds like you, too, have a 200 gallon tank that was just about empty as they would have delivered 191 gallons at that price. And if you had it filled, that's about right.

I shopped around and 2.89 seemed to be the going average rate right now.

I am going to stop showering and start wearing a lot more clothes.

I won't smell very good come spring time, but at least I'll have money.

Just kidding. This sucks. The place I get from is very expensive too. I remember Arlington Energy being cheaper but the annoying service wasn't worth whatever amount I saved. Good luck!

The Wall Street Journal this week predicted a 40% rise over last year for oil heated homes (and substantially less for electric).

That sounds exactly right. Diesel and heating oil are the same stuff. Diesel is running about $3.11/gal right now at Teele Sq., and there's 21ยข/gal tax for road fuel, so there you go.
