Hello Davis!

Someone asked a similar question about JP in [livejournal.com profile] b0st0n. Can anybody tell me about what time the trick-or-treaters usually make the rounds? I live in Porter, but I imagine it's a similar time range . . . Of course, it may be different this year, given that we're still on DST . . . But mostly, I'm looking to see if I should work from home if I want to get my chance frighten small children.

Okay, thank you!

It can start fairly early with the littler kids, like 5 or 5:30. But the older kids will keep coming until later. There's often a lull in between the little ones going home and the bigger ones getting started.

Of course, like you said, it might be different this year with daylight saving time. Hard to say. The weather's supposed to be nice tomorrow night, so expect hordes. :)

I used to live right by there, in 2003, and we didn't get any kids :\

I'd always kind of assumed it was 6:00; it never seemed to start up before then before we had kids (that and the fact you'd have to knock off work obscenely early).

And now that we're on the other side of the fence I couldn't imagine any sort of productive harvest if we dragged the kids out before six.

My neighborhood has a HUGE amount of trick or treaters each year. They do start about 5, but it's in dribs and drabs. By about 5:30 they start arriving steadily and continue till 7:30 or 8. You'll still get a few stragglers until 8:30, usually the older kids. Have fun!

Last year it was from about 5pm to 8pm.

I think this is the first year that the standard-time changeover has been delayed until after Halloween. The change makes no sense to me.

We don't get any trick-or-treaters. I think it depends on your neighborhood. But hey, if you buy candy, the worst thing that happens is you get to eat it yourself.

Many cities/towns now have set trick-or-treating times. Does Somerville do that?

This might sound like a silly question, but when kids go trick-or-treating, do they only ring the doorbell for the bottom-floor apartments (in houses that have two or three apartments, which seem to be the majority around here), or for all of them?

I live in a third floor apartment, and the whole trick-or-treating thing hadn't crossed my mind, but after reading this post I'm wondering if I should have some candy on hand.

supposedly it saves a lot of energy. I don't really get daylight savings at all, since we don't believe in it in AZ.

Well of course you should! Because if the kids don't come... oh darn, eat it yourself, tragic. ^_^

I lived on the second floor of a three-floor (three apartment) house on Conwell. I knew neither of the other two apartments would probably have candy, so I made a sign on the door instructing kids to ring the #2 bell. For a while I also just sat out on the front porch. Conwell is a nice long street with mostly family housing (despite its proximity to Tufts), so a lot of kids were out.

Oh, that's a good idea. I was thinking that sitting on the front porch might make more sense than coming down from the third floor anyway, so maybe I'll do that for a little while.

We used to lower a basket from our old third-floor porch, with a flashlight illuminating the goods. If you've got a perch, highly recommended.

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays anymore since I get to sit out on my porch, see kids in costumes, and maybe meet some of my neighbors.

I live in Medford and I think I saw kids out as early as 4. I think people get scared and don't want their kids out after dark. I think that is unnatural!

not that I've ever heard of.

Apparently in Milwaukee the official trick-or-treating time is the Sunday afternoon before Halloween. Talk about missing the point!

hmm

What kind of candy are you giving out?

I've been amazed that kids around here don't observe the "no lights = no candy rule". I lived in Teele Square and never saw kid one. Moved to Ball Square and forgot to buy any candy, turned off my porch light and watched TV in the dark. The buggers rang the bell like I had put up a "free Hannah Montana tickets" sign on the door.

Guess I'll have to put out my SEX OFFENDER LIVES HERE flyers so I can watch Matlock in peace.

Sorry for the belated reply but: Kids will ring all the bells depending on factors like how inviting the house looks, what their parents tell them to do, and so forth. If you put a pumpkin on the porch you're much more likely to get your bell rung. Of course, since it's supposed to be a nice night, sitting on the porch with your bowl is certainly a good option as well. Enjoy the weather, see the cute kids, eat some candy, maybe meet some neighbors. There is no bad here :)

Here's my Halloween recap: Things got off to a late start this year - I think because of the time thing, and it was still light out at 5:00 when kids usually started coming. But once they started in earnest, it kept up in a steady stream. It also ran later than usual. We still had kids coming at 8:30, which is usually when you just get stragglers and it's mostly older kids. We had over 250 kids last night (the neighbors have started counting because noone believes us when we tell them!).
Talk about a great, old-fashioned halloween full of costumes (parents and kids alike), and lots of scary goings on from the people handing out the candy!
