Davis Square business comings and goings

Benjapon's, the fast-food Thai place next to Boloco, has closed. This surprised me, since they left a stack of menus at my apartment building just a couple of weeks ago. The signs on their window say that "Joey's Thai Cafe" will open there in "late November", so maybe this will just be the same place with a new name and owner.

The Green House, a store featuring "plants, flowers, baskets, gifts, and events", will open in one of the storefronts between Alfresco and Kickass Cupcakes.

Alfresco, by the way, is owned by the same person who used to own the Savannah Grill restaurant on Elm Street. (I loved their pancakes.)

Someone else has already posted about When Pigs Fly, a bread store moving into another of those storefronts. This leaves only one empty storefront left to be filled there.

That's great news! I think everyone that walks down Highland regularly wishes for stores in that poor little strip!

Too bad about Benjapons, but I tried it once and would never went back. Bland city.

I loved the drunken noodles there. It was absolutely one of my favorite restaurants in the Davis Square area, actually.

I hope it's only same recipe. We went there once, and while it wasn't horrible, it wasn't good enough to warrant a repeat - my dining companion found their pad thai totally underwhelming, and I cant' even remember what I got. As irritating as I found Fusion Express in terms of service, their food was good.

Good. Maybe the Joey's Thai Cafe won't drown the pad thai in this god-awful sticky sweet sauce to try to cover the taste of burnt oil.

Nothing seems to have stuck in that Benjapon restaurant space since Bertucci's moved out.

I ate at alfresco on friday night. food was very good. service was ok (the chef/owner? was very friendly from behind the grill but the waitresses didn't have quite the same gregarious attitude). our party was disappointed to find out they have no license to serve wine, but then at the end of our meal we overheard another party ask if they could bring their own bottle. The waitress said yes. So FYI, alfresco is BYOB.

Wish I had known that at the start of the meal so I could have run across the street to my apartment to get a bottle!

Benjapon's didn't seem to have the greatest hours. They were closed at some prime hours when I went down there, and so I ended up just getting some boloccrack instead

I had alfresco for the first time on Saturday, it was excellent (good chicken parm). The service was attentive until the end of the meal when the waitress appearently forgot about us and we had finally flag her down.

Benjapon's was sometimes or always closed on Sundays, which to me is not a smart business practice. Then again, Out of the Blue also closes on Sundays and seems to do fine.

Oh rats! I liked Benjapon's. And the owner was so young and enthusiastic.

They even had a Thai burrito. More burritos, I say! Let Davis Square be the burrito capital of the world! Viva la burrito!
