Hey Everyone,
I used to have a different account but, alas, I lost it through a complicated series of unfortunate events.

Anyway - I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find a good optometrist in the area for a check up and a new pair of specs. I've read a few articles lately that Lenscrafters have been rated poorly with the quality of their glasses. So I'm trying to avoid them, any thoughts on the issue?

Thanks!
- Mike

I went to Parrelli Optical in the Porter Square Galleria. They were pretty good, and I got some cute glasses.

I tagged your post as eye care, and you can follow that tag to see previous posts here on that subject. I have to echo the other poster's rec of Parelli Optical. They're my favorite--they're in Porter.

They aren't bad, per se, but I pretty much *don't* recommend Harvard Square Eye Care. More for the doctors being very lacking than straight up eye tests and get your perscriptions stuff. But they had a rather limited selection of glasses too though they had some good ones in the mix.

I wear contacts, so can't comment on the glasses quality at LensCrafters. However, their doctors are often just affiliated with LC, and not paid by them. I use the one in the CambridgeSide Galleria, and he is fantastic. I have some complications with my eyes, and he always spends a significant amount of time with me making sure everything is healthy and working as best as it can.

I've gotten great glasses at Eye-Q in Harvard. Not exactly cheap, but..

I've heard great things about Parelli. I like the eye doc at Lenscrafter at the Galleria, but ended up getting my glasses (which I *adore*) at Vision House in Harvard Square. They gave me a great deal!

I've been pretty happy with Central Square Eye Care (I see Dr. White). I have ordered contacts through them and have had lenses put in a pair of frames I already owned but haven't bought glasses there. And a major plus: They are right next to the T in Central Square!

Anti-rec: the place in Harvard Square on JFK street between Curious George and Urban Outfitters. They suck.

Actual rec: the hidden optometrist in the Harvard health care building at Holyoke Center. I am pretty sure you don't have to be a Harvard affiliate to use them.

I'm fond of For Eyes in Harvard Square. I have contacts, but the glasses-wearing friends I've sent there seemed pleased with them as well.

I tried many but ended up with Harvard Square Eye Care in Porter Square. Great Doctors and I loved their selection. Got a sweet deal on high index lenses (or what every they are called).

I went to Parelli because of this thread (and because I can walk there and I get a discount with my insurance), and the guy I saw looked at my prescription and quoted me [some ginormous number for the lenses alone which is more than I am used to paying for lenses + frames combined]. Now, I realize that my vision sucks and that's going to limit my lens options, but seriously. I expressed shock and he said in a sort of smug way well, you can shop around, but you're not going to find much better. So I shopped around -- two other nearby places also covered by my insurance -- and one of them is running a sale where lenses + frames would be cheaper than the lens-alone price he quoted me, and the other's base price for lenses is less than what lenses at Parelli would have cost me after my insurance discount, so, basically, screw you, Mr. Smug Expensive Dude!

Glad other people have had a nice time with them, but I figure that future people using tags to find this post might want to know about a negative experience.

Vision House Harvard Sq. a quality experience

I just returned home from visiting Vision House in Harvard Sq., they have the most stylish frames, always the best fit, my perscription is kept on file and to update it I only need to walk in and ask to speak to the Doctor and I have an exam in minutes. I always get my contact lens there, they know me and my lens are always in stock. My visit to Vision House is always a satisfying experience.
