Howdy.  I'm new to the area and thinking of getting a sofa and chair reupholtered.  It'll be a simple job; they're just wood frames with cushions.  No fancy shapes or countours or anything.  Does anyone know of a decent place nearby?  I don't need fantastic (and don't want expensive), but I'm fond of them and would like to return them to a usable state.

I think that you will find that "expensive" is the only option available, unless you do it yourself (and even then, the fabric and materials costs can add up).

I'm in the midst of re-upholstering a couple of wingback chairs, and I'll vouch that it's a lot of work (which is undoubtedly why it costs a lot). None of it is hard work, but it does seem to go on and on.

I did see some people advertising on Craigslist when I began this project. You might have some luck there.

I tagged this business services, which is a sort of catch-all for any service that doesn't have enough posts for its own tag. If you click on the tag, you'll find a few other posts that mention "upholstery" or "furniture". I don't know how helpful they are.

Can someone give an order-of-magnitude estimate of the cost to do a reupholstering? This thread and the three previous threads all seem to say "very expensive," but just how expensive is it? Are we talking $100? $200? $500? $1000? More? Of course the complexity of the item and the materials affect the cost, but a ballpark number I would find helpful.

It looks sketchy from the outside, but I swear, everything that I have seen come out of Rudy's in Teele Square looks pretty nice (from a distance, of course).

Rudy's? Isn't that a restaurant?

Nope, there is also a Rudy's upholstery place in the same block. Actually, I think the sign has been taken off in the last few months.

Sorry--had a keyboard problem. Anyway, contact for Melo and Sons:

As to cost--it depends on the size of the piece and how complicated it is (like, does it have tufting and buttons all over, or is it just straight lines.) And it depends on the fabric you choose. I think it cost about $800 for my sofa (camelback with curved arms but no buttons) not counting the fabric.

They've done excellent work for me and were always prompt and professional.
