I hear that buying at Asian markets can be a lot cheaper than regular stores. Is there one nearby? The closest one I know of is down Mass. Ave near MIT, if they're even still open. The one in Central Square seems to be closed.

That depends on what you are buying.

If you're looking for Japanese stuff, Reliable Market in Union Square is fine. If you're talking about grocery stuff in general, then you would need to hike over to one of the 88 markets or the Ming's Market in Boston.

buying what?

There's a little place on Mass Ave between Porter and Arlington, near City Paint, and there's the Porter Exchange mall.

Kotobukiya in Porter is actually a bit pricey after all things are considered.

The closest is the Reliable Market in Union Square - it's a Korean market, with a lot of Japanese items.

However, the most T-accesible are in Chinatown, the C-Mart and the Super 88. Take the Red Line to South Station and the C-Mart is the market under the parking garage.

The biggest and best is the Super 88 in Dorchester, but you'd need to take a shuttle bus from Andrew to get there. But they're open til midnight 7 days a week and they're HUGE.

There's also a Super 88 in Alston that's fairly T accessible. I'm not sure how it compares with the Dorchester one, but it is a large cheap grocery store.

Also, there is a new one in Malden on Commercial ave, about a less than 5 minutes walk from the Malden Center T stop. It's pretty big, but I've never been to the Dorchester one either so not sure how it compares.

I haven't checked out that one near city paint on mass ave that someone else mentioned, but i live nearby so i'm going to head there soon.

You don't need to take a shuttle bus from the Red Line stop at Andrew Station. It's a pretty easy (though not terribly scenic) walk to the Super 88 from the train station.

Does anyone know where in the Greater Boston Area I could buy a large block of fresh tofu?

Big enough to roast over a pit fire. Vegan luau is the idea.

I'm actually inquiring on behalf of a friend who wants to this. I'm not sure if she got the inspiration from Homestar Runner or not.

Maybe Russo's on Pleasant Street in Watertown? I know I've seen tofu in tubs (about three times the size of tofu packaging found in the regular market) near their dairy section. I would think that Super88 or the like would also carry them (but I don't actually frequent Asian markets much).

Yeah I've bought the tofu in tubs before, but it's not as large as I need. (see above)

You mean BVS occasionally provides information that's not of the "OMG YOU SHOULD BE A VEG OR UR KILLING CUTE ANIMALS!" type?

Color me surprised.

Chang Shing Tofu is a local (Cambridge) tofu factory. 37-39 Rogers St, Cambridge - 617-868-8878. I don't know if they sell direct (their stuff is available commercially at a few stores in the area), or how big they produce, but it's definitely worth calling to ask.

For more info, see http://www.boston.com/ae/food/articles/2006/03/22/tofu/

According to this, if I'm reading it correctly, they'll sell you Hot Tofu and Soy Milk at their factory:

My Chinese isn't so good, so if someone would verify that I would appreciate it.

The tofu Harvest sells is made by a local place in JP, so they could probably make a large block (or not cut a large block up into the normal retail sizes).

Little teeny store with some cool stuff on Mass Ave, very close to Davis. 2380something Mass Ave, between Alberta Terrace and Dudley St. Very close to where the bike path crosses Mass Ave.

Asian market

Yep, called "Han Ah Reum." It's Korean-run, tiny, very clean. I find almost everything I need here (and I avoid succumbing to the monopolies of a Super 88 or Reliable Market).

..then again if you take the red line to Quincy they have a very large Asian population there, too, so you are likely to find alot there as well. i passed alot when i got off at that stop.. :o)

If you're willing to go to Quincy Center and then take a 225 Weymouth Landing bus, you can check-out Kam Man Center. Think of it as a mall targeted at the local Asian immigrant populace.
