I'm looking for your recommendations for where I can find the *best* rye or pumpernickel rye round loaf this Wednesday (the day before Thanksgiving). I know the Stop n' Shop on McGrath does a decent job, but I figure this would be a good chance to hear about local bread places that I'm completely unaware of. Any recommendations in Somerville, Arlington or Cambridge would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and happy (early) Turkey Day!

if sliced - when pigs fly - which is at whole foods and pemberton farms. If not sliced, iggy's. Quebrada in Arlington (near the capital) has amazing breads and I'm willing to bet they have a rye.

All three are local bakeries.

Hi-Rise Bakery at the corner of Huron and Concord in Cambridge have amazing breads baked on the spot. Not so sure if a fantastic rye is among them, but it's worth a visit for the smell of all that baking bread alone.

Actually, the Johnny's Foodmaster makes a mean pumpernickel bread. I can't remember the shape but I'm sure you could talk with them about it. This is the Johnny's at Route 16 and Broadway, not the scary carpeted one.

I know this is probably not what you had in mind - but check Goodwill for a bread maker. There are a few there whenever I go and usually look unused.

They're easy to use and you get fresh baked bread for pennies whenever you want.

OK, so it's in Brookline, but Clear Flour makes fantastic breads and pastries.

The Cheddar Black Pepper bread at Hi Rise is fantastic (not that you asked...)

Iggy's is always good, too.

Happy Thanksgiving!
