Can anyone tell me which local stores/organizations/etc. are currently doing food drives? I was just reading an article about how food pantries are running seriously low on supplies lately, and I know that there are often food drives going on around this time of year. Thanks in advance!

Urban Oasis (in Inman Sq) and Harvest Coop (in Central) both have places to bring shelf-stable foods.

I volunteer at St. Paul's in Harvard Square, and they're really in need of donations. They do great work, so please consider donating there....

So if someone wanted to donate a few turkeys for thanksgiving, or is that not necessary or too overboard of a donation

would you plan on buying them first? You might want to call the place first and ask what they want/need. The only kitchen I ever vol. at would often get huge turkey donations (as in many turkeys, not necessary enormous-sized ones) and would usually be low on something. I'm sure each place is different.

The Wainwright Bank branch in Davis has a box in the lobby for canned-goods donations.

Which go to the Somerville Homeless Coalition's Project SOUP (mentioned above). The box is accessible only during banking hours -- Mon-Wed 8:30-4:30, Thurs-Fri 8:30-5:00, Sat 9:00-1:00 .

As someone who runs a food pantry, I would suggest either just donating money, or at least contacting the program you want to support in advance to find out what they need.

Unsolicited donations of random foodstuffs are an incredibly inefficient way of getting food into the emergency food system, and often more work than they're worth for the program that receives them.

thanks for that

I volunteered at the Greater Boston Food Bank earlier this year and was really surprised by what they are looking for and what they aren't ... on the other hand a food pantry where my mom lives would happily take a frozen turkey as they made up boxes for needy families and what is Thanksgiving without turkey? (Before people post, I know, vegetarian.) But yeah ... calling first is best.

I've seen a donation box at the Bally's gym in Porter Square.
