Is there a place near buy where one could purchase locally produced milk? I checked the Archives and couldn't find anything.

Yes, McKinnons. The one in Davis Square is not related to the ones in Everett, Nashua, and Danvers so I cannot speak for it, but the chain McKinnons in those three towns has Richardson's milk, which is made in Middleton. It tastes unbeleivable and is actually cheaper than Garelick Farms and Hood ($3.09 for skim, last I checked in Danvers).

McKinnons is awesome all around, but they aren't open too late which sucks if you get home kind of late from work.

I've never been, I've only been to the chain McKinnons in Danvers, which was open until 8PM so it was perfect. I hear both have excellent meat. I do love excellent meat.

Drop into Casa de Carne in Union Square sometime. One of the butchers doesn't understand much English, but he and everyone behind the counter are pretty friendly AND they'll carve steaks to your specifications... for good prices no less.

I trust any establishment whose name is "House of Meat".

Seriously. If you're going to hang a shingle, you may as well lay it all out.

Whole Foods in Cambridge (Fresh Pond) sells milk from Crescent Ridge Dairy which is yum.

Their 1.5% tastes almost as rich as whole, so I swear by the stuff for drinkin', coffee, and all manner of home dairy.

I think they stock two other local producers as well.

Slightly off-topic, but Crescent Ridge also has AWESOME ice cream. Plus you can eat your ice cream while lookin' at the cows! Totally worth a drive to Sharon.

In a pinch, Kickass Cupcakes carries local milk. I don't know how big the sizes go but they might be open later than McKinnon's.

They only carry quarts, unfortunately. But it is good stuff.

Only quarts, and there's a $.90 deposit on the bottles. Not prohibitive, but something to consider if you don't want to have to do returns.

When I lived near Philly, if I had occasion to travel out that way, I used to get milk at this dairy farm in Oxford, PA, that came in glass bottles. It was unhomogenized so the cream floated to the top and you had to shake it before pouring.

The milk is decent, too. Makes great cheese.

If you want to try something right away, with no equipment investment outside of a pot you already have and some cheesecloth, start with queso blanco (http://www.geocities.com/heartland/cottage/1288/quick/queso.htm). I'll generally use cider vinegar rather than the white called for (white has no taste whatsoever) or an equal amount of fresh squeezed lemon juice.

It's a sweet cheese with just a hint of tartness that I particularly enjoy stuffed in chiles rellenos, but that's a different thread. ^^

I consider it more than just a pinch (in fact I need to swing by for my twice weekly milk pickup!)

Milk is $1.75/quart. There's a 90 cent deposit on glass bottles.
It's from Shaw Farm.

I find that I find a smaller glass of this milk more satisfying, so I'm saving money on milk overall.

Kickass cupcakes is open generous hours (but closed on Mondays). If you ask they'll also sell you amazing heavy cream from the back fridge ($5 quart, same deposit).

And people raved about the eggnog (don't like the stuff, myself.)

I think Dave's Fresh Pasta was going to start selling Shaw Farms milk. The Shaw Farms website has a listing, not sure how updated it is...

They sell local eggs (but only extra-large, which can be a problem if you're trying to bake with them.)

I'm hoping the bread store opening near Kick*ss cupcakes will have a refrigerator case and sell local eggs there. I guess I should tell them that.

How do you all know about this? I looked on their site after reading this thread and couldn't find any really helpful information about any of their products. I am on a quest to try to figure out where the bulk of my food is coming from (impossible) but I am keeping my ears open when I hear rumor of local produce. I'd love to hear more about Dave's... I stopped in today for the first time and just finished some really yummy soup and challah.

Word of mouth. I was bemoaning the difficulty of finding local eggs and a friend mentioned Dave's Fresh carries them.
