The second installment of Chris Faraone's Weekly Dig series on Somerville politics is now on the street and online:

Ghosts of Assembly Square

The article ends with a teaser for upcoming part 3: "the Dig will show some of the ways Curtatone’s development agenda has manifested throughout Somerville: an ethically challenged zoning board, uncertified building commissioners, and residents learning to fight back."

(for part 1, see both The Somerville Files, Part 1: Nightmare on Beacon Street on the Weekly Dig website, and the resulting discussion here on DSLJ.)

Things keep rolling as AS:

I like walking to DS w/ my family, but a new park, movies, restaurants, etc. all along the water will likely mean fewer visits to DS once the complex is complete.

I just walked from Magoun Square to Assembly Square. What a nightmare! It's not far, but it's so pedestrian-hostile I thought I was back in Michigan. There were a couple of places I nearly turned back and went to the Harvard Square Staples instead.

Is there a good way to get across 28 and 93? Other than by taking a bus? I found the white lines for crosswalks, but there were places that seemed to assume a pedestrian would only be going the other way. Or no light at all, with traffic that looked like it would be heavy fairly often.

Since the subject of the IKEA store came up in the comments to the last post, here is a link to a Somerville Patch article on it: IKEA granted extension on construction permits. It seems that the head office has not approved funding to build that store, so it's up in the air when (and maybe even if) it will get built.

I live in the Greater Davis Square Area, and I have jury duty in a few weeks at the Somerville District Court, on Fellsway. I am trying to figure out how best to get there on the T, and mbta.com and maps.google.com are giving me radically different information.

According to the MBTA Trip Planner, this trip is going to take me about an hour. I walk to Davis Square and catch any a variety of buses (depending on how early I want to arrive) which by way of Sullivan Station and sometimes a transfer, will drop me off on the same side of RT 93 as the courthouse.

According to Google Maps, I can make the trip in under forty minutes, by taking the 89 bus to Foss Park, and then walking along McGrath Highway, and crossing RT 93. This route involves crossing two highway ramps on foot and using the McGrath Highway underpass. I zoomed in with with satellite view, and, yeah, there are white pedestrian-crossing lines on the pavement. Street view doesn't go under the highway.

I have no personal familiarity with the area. Does anybody who has made this pilgrimage before know if the Google Maps route is actually safe for pedestrians?

P.S. The court's own web page just says "Take the #92", which is apparently completely unhelpful.

I was thinking about a trip to the Stoughton store and it got me wondering about the Assembly Square store & redevelopment there.  There's been a lot of construction activity, but I haven't seen any new news about it.

Has anyone heard if the construction is going as planned?  Are there delays of problems because of the bad economy?

From the Somerville Journal:

At City Hall this morning there will be an announcement of an agreement reached at Assembly Square.
At this writing, Mayor Joe Curtatone, representatives from Mystic View Task Force, Federal Realty Investment Trust and IKEA are scheduled announce a settlement ¡§a shared vision,¡¨ the press release states, of ¡§transit-oriented, mixed use development.¡¨

Comment away.

As a sidenote, you can read the Somerville Journal blog at [livejournal.com profile] somervillemass2. It is vaguely reporting that "something else is coming today," so, yeah.

The new Mayor will be hosting a meeting tonight (Monday, Feb 23rd) at 6:00 at the high school, to discuss development plans for Assembly Square.

If you're as pissed off by the "Assembly Square Task Force" as I am (they've blocked every proposal for development of the site for years, and IKEA has finally given up and is building down in the south shore now), this would be a good chance to make your voice heard. Don't let a small band of shrill zealots drown out the voice of the majority.

(If you support Mystic View's plans for a 30,000-person office complex, you're welcome to show up as well. Just be prepared to explain why that proposal isn't far worse than the other ones that MVTF has already torpedoed.)

The Mystic View Task Force's relentless barrage of lawsuits has evidently succeeded in making IKEA decide to build in Avon instead.

Mystic View's constantly shifting rationalizations for opposing the development of the abandoned Assembly Square site have been changing as frequently as Mr. Bush's justifications for invading Iraq. Mediation attempts between Mystic View and the developers collapsed last month, with the mediators reporting that the parties were too far apart in their viewpoints. As a result of the mediation failure, the state will not provide funding for a T stop on the site, and it appears that IKEA will build elsewhere.

Somerville loses tax revenue, and the Assembly Square plot will remain a weed-strewn vacant wasteland. Thanks so much, Bill Shelton and the rest of Mystic View Task Force! You're managed the amazing task of turning gold into lead, and all Somerville knows who's responsible.
