Just in case any of you happen to be considering wandering through the middle of Tufts' campus tonight at say, 10 pm, please be warned you will encounter a large number of drunken students at the top of Walnut Hill with a smaller, but no less drunk, group of naked youngsters...both sexes.  Tonight is Tufts' Naked Quad Run...oh, I'm sorry.  It's officially the "Nighttime Quad Reception" featuring music, free donuts and  hot chocolate and the TU Police Dept. looking the other way while students run around the Rez Quad repeatedly.

It all makes for a good show, but be prepared to receive a "townie" insult or two if you look over the age of 25.  If you show up naked, you will probably garner some decent measure of respect from the students.

And if any of you have Tufts neigbors, expect some level of drunkeness into the wee hours (no pun intended) of the morning.

Thanks for the heads-up, I'll bring my video camera and sell the footage online.

UVM had something similar called "The Naked Bike Ride", conducted in January. It was actually pretty hilarious, and it had the advantage of being over quickly; they biked the route through campus and then tossed back on their clothes.

Not sure of the date, but they're doing it again soon (brother-in-law is taking classes there this semester). Naked ANYTHING in the winter is a DO NOT WANT. Even the L Street Brownies have their bits covered.

Yeah, it's an annual tradition. They're only out in the cold for a half-hour, max. Needless to say they bike quickly.

ONLY a half-hour? I wouldn't be able to stand it for 5 seconds. Even getting out of the shower in the winter is agony until I have a towel on.

Well, the Tufts kids have themselves a nice ice storm to scamper around naked in. Picturing all those falls on drunken bare asses warms my wicked heart.

Oh no. A bunch of monied college twats calling me a townie while running around drunk and naked in the middle of a sleet storm.

Somehow, I fail to see the insult there.

The insult is for those who show up to gawk at the participants.

Ah hah.
I'm sure that a better one than "Townie" can be thought up for anyone who cares enough to go look at some naked college kids on a crappy night such as this.

Maybe it's the thrill of live action, you could compare it to watching the Red Sox on television, or seeing them at Fenway.

(Except I'm not sure if I'd want to watch David Ortiz run the bases in the nude...)

as a tufts student and regualr of this community, i ask that you reassess your stereotypes (or get rid of them) in regards to tufts students.

i am neither monied nor a twat and while i am not running around naked or getting drunk, i still take offense at your blanket grouping of all students who participate in a certain activity as such. not only am i poor, congenial, and sober, but so are all my friends.

i'd rather this remained a friendly community of neighbors and i am certain that not everyone is as hostile to the college students of the community so please take care that you do not let a closed mind dictate the insults that come from your open mouth.

As a townie, long time member here as well and frequent patron of business in The Square as well as former college student, I have honed my assessment based on what I see nightly.

If that's not you, bully.

Why does one need to be either a "townie" or a student? I am both, but identified as a student in an effort ot make you think about how a student would feel about you comments. I also patronize business in the square, so does most of the neighborhood, student or not. How does labeling entire groups of people add anything to society? How does dividing people into a strict dichotomy of townie or student solve the social problems that provoke such stereotyping?

If that's not you, bully.

See, I'm not asking you to reconsider you language for me, but for everyone. You are certainly welcome to express yourself in any legal way you choose but I made my request not because I wanted to make things better for just myself. Just because I am not the student of which you are specifically thinking does not make me suddenly feel okay about such blatant and unfriendly neighborhood divides. That sort of me-only attitude only contributes to the problem.

As am I. Big deal.

See, I'm not asking you to reconsider you language for me, but for everyone.

And I'm sure that "everyone" appreciates your efforts.

I thank you for your permission to exercise my freedom of speech. I'll sleep better now.

Listen, I think you take me far, far, far too seriously.

In the interest of academic freedom, I believe that we should do everything in our power to protect free speech and free expression. As such, I think that the poor, congenial, and sober should join with their rich, boorish, and wasted neighbors in cold and naked solidarity.

You've excluded ME from this. What of those of us who are neither poor nor wealthy, certainly not congenial and not necessarily sober by choice but sober nonetheless?

Why must you divide us so?

please take care that you do not let a closed mind dictate the insults that come from your open mouth.

So, what, because you claim not to fit the stereotype, she's supposed to instantly reconsider them?

The blunt reality is that some people have bad experiences with Tufts students, and that's just going to naturally influence their opinions. I myself have had no problems with Tufts students, and I live less than a mile from the main entrance of the campus. However, I've heard complaints about loud parties on weekdays, vomit on people's lawns, and college-age drunks are a common sight out my front door Thursday through Saturday night.

Speaking as a former resident assistant, you don't change the perceptions of people by lecturing them about how they're wrong, you change them by making sure every student takes responsibility for those perceptions.

I think rather it was just a simple plea to maybe not go tossing people into groups and immediately calling them names. Are some students jerks? Sure. Kids plus booze equal drunken stupid behavior, whether they're college students or Somerville high kids. Calling all Tufts students "monied twats" is pretty lame, and needlessly inflammatory.

It goes both ways. When I was a student, I had eggs thrown at me, people screaming from their cars, the general juvenile pranks played by local kids on college students. The bad blood goes both ways, but there's no need to fan it here.

It'd help if the comment that started all this was remotely serious, and the comment I was responding to wasn't frankly rather snotty.

I'm not saying it's a NICE aspect of human nature, but people generalize all the time. To the degree you can change that, it generally takes change from within.

Where's your "It's a shame that students can't interact with members of the community without being asses about it?" response to the OP?

FWIW, I'm guessing that 'monied twats' referred to the Tufts students who would be tossing out the "'townie' insult or two if you look over the age of 25" and not ALL Tufties. The town/gown question was brought up by the OP as a jibe, and the response was a jibe in the other direction. There isn't an argument here. There is simply one person who was offended by a statement that in all likelihood had nothing to do with her and who chose to ignore another potentially inflammatory statement because she wasn't part of that target group. That being the case, the only real response is to remind her that there is nothing that grants her the right not to be offended.

The bit where I said students plus booze, above. And having been a student, and now having lived in the area for over a decade, yeah, it's a shame that some students can't, and make a bad name for everybody else, same as townies.

Perhaps then by suggesting that anyone over the age of 25 would be "insulted" with the slur, "townie" thrown at them isn't the best way to not throw fuel on the fire.

But, eggs you say? Maybe it was just a quaint townie way of telling you to eat more, you were looking piqued.
