Red velvet cake is hard to find in this area. It's a Southern thing. Check some of the food-related tags here; there was an excellent post/thread about local bakeries a few months back, with links to the bakeries' websites when applicable.

I never had any idea that red velvet cake was a "southern" thing until someone else asked to find it on a new england-based LJ. Weird.

Same with doberge cake. Which is DELICIOUS. And my favorite!

In any event, I'd love to hear of the OP is able to find it in this area.

The Spotted Apron's red velvet cupcakes are divine -- our apartment has a weakness for them.
Though I have plenty of family in the South, I think I actually discovered Red Velvet cake by watching the movie version of Steel Magnolias (which takes place in Louisiana), in which Julia Roberts' character's wedding cake is a white-iced, armadillo-shaped red velvet cake. It's hilariously disturbing. Or disturbingly hilarious. Not sure which.

i just moved here a year ago from KY, i didn't know red velvet was a southern thing.. now i want it!
i've been to the spotted apron, it's pricey but decadent :)

i've been hankering for some gingerbread men and lyndell's has none... anyone have a suggestion for that?

"Doberge cake" = "Dobos torte", which you can get at Konditor Meister.

You could also ask at a couple of the Southern/New Orleans restaurants around (Magnolia's and All Star in Inman come to mind)

I found a chowhound thread that lists two places:

The Spotted Apron (just across the river, on Cambridge St. near Mass General) has red velvet cupcakes.
http://spottedapron.com/

Lulu's on Hanover St. in the North End lists both cup cakes and layer cakes
http://www.lulusbakeshoppeboston.com/

The photos on those web sites are making me hungry! CAKE!

I second the recommendation for the Spotted Apron red velvet cupcakes. Very nice.
