Yet another question about snow/winter/parking...

I live near ball square in an odd no man's land between Medford and Somerville. I am a resident of neither (by choice) and I generally don't have too much trouble finding street parking.. unless it snows..

Does anyone know of a place where there is overnight parking for non residents in this area during snow season? In the past I used to just park my car in alewife overnight, but they aren't currently allowing this due to construction..

Wait - every square meter of Massachusetts is part of some city or town. There is no land "between" Somerville and Medford. You live in one or the other.

It might be an interesting exercise to look up your property in the Somerville Assessor's Database, the Somerville Assessor's Maps, and the Medford Asessor's Database. If you own a car, you should be getting an annual excise tax bill from some town or city.

"An Odd No Man's Land" is a street name

I'm guessing "An Odd No Man's Land" is a street name.

... for one of the roads that in the space/time rift to the northwest of Tufts.

I lived in a house on the Brighton/Brookline border that had services determined by where the front porch fell on the line. Because the porch was clearly in Brighton, all mail had to be addressed there, but since the rest of the building was in Brookline, utilities were provided through Brookline contractors.

It didn't help that our street sign kept being stolen. ^_^

Where did you register to vote, and who did you pay auto excise tax to (if you had a car)?

No car, and I was a non-resident at the time. (Student, registered to vote in my home state...)

Also... have you tried using the parking facilities at Wellington Circle?

When I was a little kid, the WV/PA state line literally ran through our house.

I have no idea what the implications of that were for my parents. I was just pretty amused I could wake up in one state and go downstairs to eat breakfast in another.

Space is pretty tight overall for overnight parking. I don't think the bridge over the railroad tracks in Ball Square is resident only parking, so that might be an option people forget. Half the streets are "no permit required" but there aren't going to be many open spaces right now.

There are a fair number of streets in that area of Somerville that are not "permit parking only" and thus anyone can park there at any time (though not for 48 continuous hours). However, in conditions like those we're having today, you might severely piss off some residents of such a street, if you take up one of that street's currently very scarce parking spaces.

(for example, the street I live on is a large-ish through street where parking is only allowed on one side, so right now with all the snow and ice, there are even fewer parking spaces than usual, and the residents of my street do tend to get pretty irritated with "outsiders" using our street to park on.)

Also, anywhere there are parking meters, as you probably know, you can park there from 6pm to 8am or similar. You could try e.g. the parking lot next to the CVS on Medford Street, which isn't too far from where you live.

the one thing about the metered spots though is to check if they have 'no parking during snow emergency' signs. i live right off Mass ave on the somerville/cambridge border and cannot park at the meters during the snow emergency.

Does Somerville have certain posted streets where you can't park on either side during snow emergencies, or just the general rule to park on the odd side?

Ohhh.. I live on a similar street (Morrison Ave). Nothing irks me more, then someone from elsewhere in Somerville who parks on our street (Using their resident permit) so they can then shortcut over to the Davis T stop. (We're like 30 seconds away.) Really annoying to dig out a spot, and come home to find out that someone from the other side of town is parked in that space.

But how do you know the car is from somewhere else in the city?

I thought we established that the number on Somerville parking stickers is both the month of expiration and an indicator of the neighborhood where the car is registered.

I dug out my car and my sister's yesterday (~2.5 hours digging including sidewalks) and both spots were gone within two minutes of our leaving them. I do hope that they've been vacated when I get home from work, but if not I'll put on my hazards, unload the kids and their stuff, and go park somewhere else; that's life in the big city if you don't have a driveway.

p.s. Ron, you look for a different number (expiration month) on the parking sticker. We're 8 so if there's a 1 resident sticker, you know that they don't live on your street. Anyone know if there's a map of these numbers publicly available? Or the visitor pass letters for that matter?

That can't be correct, because people who move here at different times get different stickers, it's not based on location.

I should know, everyone in my neighborhood has different numbers.

In my experience that is not the case. (Maybe it has changed?)
People get whatever sticker is for the area they moved into (when they move into Somerville, not from another part) regardless of when they move. Ex: When I moved into Somerville it was November. I moved into an area with February renewal, so even though it was only 3 months away, I still got a 2 sticker (and then had to renew in February).

I'm not completely sure what happens when you move from one part of Somerville to another, though . . . I think you might have to switch over to the new one when the old one expires?

Maybe you just have lots of people who have moved from different parts of Somerville recently?

Not likely, in my neighborhood.

Them using different ones to designate different neighborhoods doesn't seem to be the case, because I got my first one living by the secret donut shop, in may.

I renewed in may, with my new address, way over by McGrath highway, and still have a five sticker.

Additionally, what would be the rationale for having them based on neighborhood, seeing how somerville resident stickers are good for the whole city, unlike malden's, which ARE districted?

while it's frustrating, it's legal:

The RESIDENTIAL sticker is good for all posted streets within the city and not just the street where you live.

There might be parking over by Tufts Park, but I just managed to strand my car on the ice, so that probably isn't your best bet.

CITY OF SOMERVILLE
Message sent - 12/17/2007
parking alert - snow

Hello. This is Jackie Rossetti from the City of Somerville with important information about parking procedures related to this weekend's snow and ice storms. To assist residents with parking problems while snow removal operations continue, the city will be providing overnight parking at school and municipal lots designated for snow emergency parking. Beginning at 5 p.m. on Monday, December 17th and ending at 7 a.m. Tuesday, December 18th, residents may park in any of these specially designated lots. You can find a full list of available lots on the city's website, at www.somervillema.gov. Please note that vehicles parked overnight in these lots MUST be removed by 7:00 am in order to accommodate school and city workers. Please also note that there will be NO further enforcement of street sweeping regulations until sweeping season resumes in April of 2008. Thank you for your patience as we work to make the city's streets safe, clean, and dry. If you have further questions, please contact 311.

Are you sure about Alewife? I parked there on Saturday night and took the T back to Davis. I picked up my car this morning and paid $10. I had 2 overnights without a problem

What about the Tufts parking garage? Can you park there overnight? I know it is open to the public.

That was going to be my suggestion. You should call and ask in a non-direct way -- "oh I'm a student and I'll be working late on campus...will you tow my car or can I leave it?"
