UPDATE: Since I started working full time again, I've had considerably less availability for this. I average a few requests a month, but they always need it right away in the middle of a work day, which I can't do anymore. If you need notarization between 8AM and 6PM on a weekday, try any of the banks in Davis. Outside of that, you can always ask and I'll see what I can do.

I became a Notary Public for a previous job, and since I'm commissioned until 2016 and my NP stuff is just sitting here, I might as well offer the service to my neighbors if anyone needs it. I've never charged for the service and I still don't, though I won't say no if you want to buy me coffee at Diesel or bake me something. I don't drive so I can't come to you unless you're very near, but I think getting documents notarized in a coffee house is more pleasant than in a bank anyway.

If I'm needed, my email address is on my LJ.

It might be worth tagging this "notary public", since that's a very specific service...and as far as I'm aware, the nearest notary publics are downtown, so you can spare people quite a trip!

I tagged it "business services" which is where I put any service that doesn't have enough posts for its own separate tag yet. Most bank branches have notary services, but it would be more fun to have a friend do it.

Not to mention cheaper and less of an inconvenience. Just a useful bit of info, I know several UPS stores in the area offer notary public services, including the one across from the Borders in DTX.

It's true. She is.

(Perhaps you could get a notarized document saying so?)

FYI, there are notaries *everywhere*. If you randomly walk into any bank or real estate office, odds are good there will be several available. Law offices tend to have them as well.

Also, according to state law (M.G.L. c. 262, s. 41), in Massachusetts, notaries may charge no more than $1.25 for noting and recording a document (see here (http://www.mass.gov/mtrs/2members/22retiree/22benverfaq.htm)), so if anybody is charging you big bucks for it, just say no.

I know there are lots of notaries but honestly a lot of them are in-house type folks not offering commercial services. I know banks and the like have them but those people aren't exactly at your convenience. :-)

They're at *my* convenience -- can't speak to yours. :)

But seriously, they don't necessarily advertise it (it's not like it's gonna make them a lot of money), but they do offer it. For example, if you walked into my office, you could ask the admin at the front desk and she'd do an office-wise page to see if any notaries were in, and if someone was, they'd do ya. I would imagine many other offices work similarly casually.

Oh, but your actions belie your words!

Now wait, I'm not offering THAT service!
You’re not? But— but— *Sniff*, *sniff*. [Starts to cry.]

I needed something notarized back in Philadelphia some years ago (not recently). I went into a number of banks (including my parents', with a parent with me; my own bank was back in Ithaca). They flat-out refused if I was not a customer/not on bank business. Maybe the laws are different in Mass? I did eventually find someone to do it, but it would have been easier to go to someone *knowing* they could do it on the first try!

Minor and pedantic, I know. But it's "notaries public" not "notary publics"

Nope, good to know. Thanks!

Just in case anyone's curious, here's an earlier post about notaries, from about a year ago. It's the only one I can recall (or at least the only one that I tagged).

From what I've observed, becoming a Justice of the Peace is all about graft. :-)

Um, no.
I filled out the form, got the signatures, sent it in, and managed - it seems - to find the window where there was an opening in the legislated maximum of 1 JP per 5000 residents of a town.

I was appointed a JP in Aug. '06.

The only payment I made was to the Secretary of the Commonwealth's office, for the oath recording.

Sorry to distract a good snark with facts.

No, I meant graft coming IN to you, not going out! :-)

In all seriousness, I am of course exaggerating and most of what I know about being a justice of the peace is what I've observed in small-town Vermont, my grandfather's experiences being a J.P. and my father's experiences as a local journalist. We're talking the occasional tip the groom won't take back and minor attempts at getting a kid out of a speeding ticket, not major corruption.

You have seemed pretty peaceful whenever I've met you.

I suspect that, if one were to advertise/sell harder than I do, one could make a reasonable side-business out of JP-ing, but as it stands, I just get some fun-cash out of it... and I REALLY have been enjoying it (the marrying, not the cash), too. :)

Of course. I don't promise to reply in a timely fashion, but then, I don't promise that to my Mother, either. :)

Aw, you rock. If I ever need my signature officially verified, I'll come to you!

Lots of folks at Harvard Law School are notaries, so if folks are ever in Harvard when they need one, it can be worth checking in with someone there. They'd be annoyed if they got bugged all the time (mainly it's staff who work with professors who also practice and need things notarized) but in an occasional emergency, there are some nice folks who'd help out.

(I always meant to become a notary, but then when I moved to a different position that didn't need it as much it didn't seem worth going for the cost on my own, so I'm kinda jealous of you, ptb.)
