Hi all,
Just got this from the somerville snow emergency email list.

The City of Somerville will declare a snow emergency today at 3 p.m. In
accordance with the City's policy, parking restrictions will be enforced
four hours after the emergency has been declared (7p.m.)

ooo fun!

And remember :

There is NO PARKING ON THE EVEN SIDE.

Parking on the odd side is allowed.

arrgh. why do they insist and declaring (or decidign to) snow emergencies before a flake has even fallen? Guess they didn't learn from last time.

Because if they waited until there was snowfall to call in the road crew, they may very well not be able to plow the roads well and then this community would be complaining about them being unprepared like in December. Plus, if they waited for snowfall and it was a storm that started strong, then people who had to move their cars would complain about doing so in unsafe conditions.

Look at it as a preventative measure, not a corrective one.

I thought the plowers were sort of on-call and they would go out when necessary, not that they had to be told specifically "go right now" by someone. maybe it's different up here.

i see what you're saying - and there will always be something to complain about :) - but i take a more libertarian approach: if you know a storm is coming and you're worried about conditions, you can move your car any damn time without being told to. the gov't doesn't remind us to buy toilet paper before a blizzard...hmmm.. that would be really funny. i can see the radio ads now.

I guess I also a prefer a finer line: Instead of being stuck with a snow emergency when there's no snow, I'd say "If there is 2 or more inches of snow on the ground by 3pm, a state of emergency will be declared". i guess i'd make a terrible mayor :)

They're on call, but there's not a plowers depot. They have to be rounded up.

If it were up to me, I'd plow the sidewalks and leave the streets alone, so you'd make a better mayor on that account.

The problem is when the 2 or more inches of snow happens at 3 am instead of 3 pm. The snow emergency has to be called at a reasonable time to maximize compliance. There's gotta be a way to call the snow emergency so that people don't have to leave work early to move their cars, but still not wait so long moving the cars is moot. BTW, it looks like most of my neighbors didn't move to the odd side of the street. I guess it is one way to avoid shoveling out your car.
