Every so often, I do a Google Blog Search for "Davis Square". When I did so today, I found:
Quick casual café concept in Somerville MA
8 Jan 2008
Located in popular Davis Square, this is a high profile location with excellent visibility and parking and in close proximity to Harvard Square, Inman Square and Porter Square. The site is within...
BizQuest.com: Massachusetts Businesses for Sale - http://massachusetts.bizquest.com/page1.html
The listing page itself carries no date, but I'm going to believe Google's "8 Jan 2008", especially since the listing currently appears on page 1 of massachusetts.bizquest.com, making it a very recent listing. It says they are selling the business for $250,000, after having sunk over $600,000 into renovations.

This sure looks like Boloco to me. Anyone know more?

Aw, damn. I don't know more, but that sounds like Boloco to me, too.

... Which is really aggravating, because I bet it's basically that Chipotle's fault. While burritos, etc, are hardly my favorite food, Boloco is head & shoulders above any Qdoba or Chipotle or other such chain. :(

Chipotle just opened. Its hardly to blame. I would think that putting a business between Qdoba and Anna's, with it being throwing distance from Boca Grande and Lupi(something? off Elm/Somerville Ave), did not help the business much. If you are coming off the T, it is much easier to stop in the square than walk outside of it.

I never thought I would say this but there are too many burritos in one space. =) The place is always empty when I go to get a smoothie. Its sad but not entirely unexpected.

That place rocks. You know you've come to the right place when half the customers are ordering in Spanish.

It could also be that Boloco can't hold a candle to Anna's...

it's too bad Anna's can't hold a candle to Anna's from 5+ years ago. talk about going downhill...

Boloco is in a bad spot for what's essentially a fastfood spot.

what was different about Anna's 5 years ago?

the burritos were edible :P

(could just be bad luck, but every time i've been to anna's lately *something* has been wrong--usually the beans are still a little crunchy in the middle)...though "lately" means pre-2006 since I havent gone in a while.

I agree. I don't know why either, but they haven't been as good lately. I used to be a fan of Anna's. But I now usually alternate between Boloco, Chipotle and Tacos Lupita.

I found a ginormous bone in my chicken burrito last week.

Yeah, I'm off Anna's for a while.

Chipotle has not impressed me yet.

Just say no to rice. Everything else is really good at Chipotle.

Having had things that are not the rice, I'm forced to disagree with you. It's not BAD, but it's nothing I'd go out of my way for or actively think about.

yeah, i'm always "impressed" by how slapdash and half-assed the things I get there are lately :P

If you want a Mexican-style burrito, yeah, Anna's, but that is only one of quite a variety of stuff at Boloco. I like their teriyaki, the bangkok, and a bunch of others, though I'd call them wraps, not burritos.

It's too bad they have to close that location, but it really doesn't seem like a great spot for a business of that sort. I think a regular restaurant (that would be more of a destination) would do much better.

Except that Anna's has no vegan burritos as far as I know. Or any vegan food in general.

Out of curiosity, what's non-vegan about the tortillas, vegetarian rice, roasted veggies, beans (okay, the refried beans are suspicious), salsa, or guacamole?

Granted I've never actually eaten there, but that's because they told me they cook their rice with chicken stock and their beans had lard, but that was a few years ago. Maybe they have alternatives now?

I'm not trying to put them down. Most real mexican restaurants are like this, but for me I'm better off with Boloco's bangkok tofu wrap or something similar. But I'm in the minority.

BTW, I almost never go to Boloco because their real problem (as people have said) is that they're in a bad location.

Anna's default rice is cooked with chicken stock, but a couple of years ago they started carrying vegetarian rice as an option and putting up signs saying so. I don't know about the lard state of the beans, but only the refried beans would really make me worry on that front; the black and pinto beans are simple enough that I'm not sure where fat would be used in their preperation (and I have plenty of vegetarian friends who either knew about or were dismayed by the rice thing that I suspect I would have heard if there was a similar issue with the beans).

I'm kinda baffled at people who go to Boloco for the "original" wrap when they can get a Super Burrito at Anna's for less, just a block away.

Boloco's never been a 'burrito'/fresh-mex place in my mind -- it's all about the original wraps like the Caesar, the Bangkok, the Buffalo, etc.
