I was up at Killington yesterday and on the way back stopped at a fabulous "food from here"  diner in Quechee called Farmers Diner (www.farmersdiner.com).  I asked where else they were going, and they said they were looking up in Burlington VT but also were considering of all places Davis Square and other communities in and around Boston.  Knowing how into, or not into, our food establishments we are here, would this be something we could or would support?

I like burritos, too! But one cannot live on burritos alone. I know this from first-hand experience. Some days you just want, well, pasta.

Is it wrong that that was my first thought?

Sounds like a neat idea, but I don't know where it would go unless they wanted to buy the Rosebud or Kelly's.

Kelly's is lovely but Rosebud kinda sucks. I wouldn't be sad to see them replaced.

Hell yes! (I am all about the local food. But I think a lot of people around here are, and anyway I've heard the Farmer's Diner food is excellent, agenda aside.)

Gasp, yes! Although how many more restaurants can Davis Square take? Doesn't anyone cook their own food anymore?

Davis desperately needs an all-night diner again, IMO, so if they were to run it overnight Davis Square could certainly take it. Dolly's used to have lines outside for much of the night.

It sounds like they also do sales of their own food products at some locations. Do you think they'd be able to take over the old Marino restaurant and market place on Mass Ave? It might have plenty of room for their commissary model. I don't know how pricey it is (probably very), but I know that the neighbors are really hoping that it continues to be a restaurant.

Why did Marino's close, and why has it been closed so long?

Date: 2008-01-28 02:51 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] icecreamempress.livejournal.com
It closed because Lelio Marino died, and his heirs were in disagreement about what to do with the property.

Then once they decided what to do with the property (sell it) it was already The End Of The Real Estate Bubble.

That's an awesome space, and I think a groovy slow-food diner would work well there.

Assuming it's as tasty as it looks, hell yes.

Well, low-carbon-footprint food is quite the rage nowadays, so now'd be the time to expand. But how well would they be able to stick to their "food from here" mission in an urban area like this? How local is local?

More importantly, how could we help make it so they could set themselves up as a real diner? (Meaning, being open 24 hours.)

First, find them a location not in Somerville.

Find some place on Mass. Ave in North Cambridge and you're golden.

(oh, Somerville, why must you forsake us our 24-hour goodness?)

Their current location closes at 3 pm or 8 pm, depending on the day, so this is not how we get a 24-hour diner.

I'd be thrilled to eat there. And they do have a Spicy Buffalo Chicken Wrap on the menu, fulfilling the Required Burrito Clause. I'm a little worried that the restaurant might be too pricey for the market, though. Said Wrap is $10.95. Were high prices one of the things that did in O'Naturals?

That along with boring tasteless food (except for the Carberry's stuff).

Looking at the menu I probably wouldn't eat there everyday price wise (aside from the fact that I like cooking at home) but would definitely drop by once a week.

I think it's a great idea!

Just wanted to mention Craigie Street Bistro to anyone who is interested in the fine dining and locally grown food thang. Not only do they obtain many of their ingredients from local farms but they give you a takeaway listing of all the local farms they buy from in case you are interested in visiting them and purchasing from them. I thought that was really nice touch.

What I'd love to see (and think would do really well) is a diner that's open late. I know 24 hrs is too much to ask around here, but something that's still open at midnight would have my business.

had dinner at Highland Kitchen this weekend and it just plain rocks! Totally neighborhood vibe, great inexpensive food, and a place within *walking* distance for most of us. Super duper music on the jukebox, excellent bartending, etc. I think that the "local" and "sustaineable" thing is ripe for Davis and the surrounding environs. True Grounds does well as does Gargoyles and Dave's Fresh. Seriously guys, check out the Highland Kitchen. I was *elated* as I walked home for dinner thinking that something this cool was in our hood.

We tried many things -- oyster po'boy, cuban reuben, pulled pork sammy and braised pork over polenta. Totally yummy food and reasonably priced -- we had cocktails (awesome bar) apps, entrees, and desserts and it came out to $45/head. You could get out of there for half that. Highly recommend.

I ate there this weekend--darn near perfect. Food was great, prices reasonable, drinks awesome and the crowd was a great mix of people. And the music was good, too.

Do they have a Barre location too? If so, ohgodcometoDavis. That was my favorite diner ever.

The web site says their Barre location has closed.

Looks like a wonderful menu, certainly a once-or-twice-a-month thing. And echoing prior comments - a 24-hour diner would be truly lovely, is anything less truly a diner? And of course "yes please, no more burritos"

Oddly enough, I have had a meal at that diner recently! It was VERY tasty. I'd love one to come to the area as long as there is room! I know there are a lot of restaurants in Davis Square, but still none really fulfill all of my desires. If that is even possible...

I would love to see just one decent NewYork-style diner somewhere in the area. This wouldn't be that, of course. *hand to forehead* *dramatic sigh*
