(Don't you hate these postings? They're always so goddamn heartbreaking. However, since I have to presume Missing, I have to write one myself.)

Abbie the Cat (aka Mr. The Cat) has not been seen in his Hall Avenue home since Sunday morning and we are very worried as to his whereabouts. An indoor cat by nature and necessity, he may have developed wanderlust and poked his snoot outside if a chance had presented itself (I don't know, I was at work all day.) At any rate he is not in any of his usual places, nor behind any interior doors behind which he sometimes finds himself and -- most importantly -- there was no change to his food dish overnight, which is the biggest indicator that he wasn't around.

He is easy to spot: he is a large, 20+ pound longhaired tuxedo cat with big eyes, big white paws, whiskers that look like Salvador Dali met a walrus, and an affectionate streak a mile wide. He will be your best friend if you are trying to eat any kind of people food. (He is especially fond of burritos anything.)

I'm in the process of contacting Somerville Animal Control and nearby vets to see if someone brought in a large sentient throw rug. We have many neighborhood strays around, however, and some whose owners allow to roam free, so I don't know if Abbie would have been brought in when we live among the feline equivalent of Fagin's gang. However, he's also an extreme creampuff when it comes to confrontation, so he might have been chased somewhere and hurt or frightened or both. I don't know. I'm rambling at this point. I just want my buddy back.

If you have any information please email it to my LiveJournal address or comment here or something. I'm hoping this post won't be necessary and that he'll show up safe and sound soon enough, but I also hope that in the event that he hasn't gone and hidden under a bookcase in the basement, someone else may have a lead for me. Thank you for your time, and don't forget to shop local. Or vote. Or vote local. Just don't shop for votes. Okay. Thank you.

It's only luck that kept my kitten off the streets last night - door didn't latch behind me. Fortunately, I live on a busy street and the trucks make scary noises.

Hi there. I saw a little dude fitting this description on Beacon Street Somerville last night. I was in between Porter Square and the Beacon Street Star Market, on the Star side of the street. The kitty was on the sidewalk walking towards me and mewed, but when I knelt down and called it over, it scurried into an ally between houses. :-/ I don't know if this was your bud or not, but it might give you a place to look.

It was a brief, not yowly (def not like a Siamese) but not squeaky either (not one of those ee eEEn ee EEn cats), and two syllables. Good luck, I'll be passing through that area again tonight so I'll keep my eyes open.

"How did he sound" -- sign that he's a Maine Coon. Well, that plus the 20 pound size and the lovely fur. He looks like a giant version of my Maggie, who is smallish for a Maine Coon, but she has some growth left in her.

Good luck finding him -- we're way across town, so I doubt we'll see him, but we'll keep an eye out.

Wow, that's quite a distance. And possibly one of the few times Abbie's been called "little". Usually the initial reaction is more along the lines of "Wow, that's a big cat!"

He is a true cat of awesomeness. (Even if he wasn't always the most respectful housemate (http://surrealestate.livejournal.com/361889.html) :)

Well little compared to me, but it was def a big ol cat. I had a Maine Coon back in the day and this one was Coon sized. Don't want to get your hopes up though, I didn't get a great look at him but the markings and size seem about right and he did give me a holla like wtf is going on mate I'm on an adventure.

Seriously, that is *so* something Abbie would say.

Please let us know when there are any updates. *hugs*

While I was putting flyers up in this area I saw a whole bunch for another cat of Abbie's description ("Phil"). I put up flyers as if your sighting were the real thing, but hopefully it was the other cat. If I were not a complete idiot I would have called the number on Phil's sign and reported your sighting.

*says many prayers and casts a few spells for the lovable creampuff's return*

No one should lose a good friend like that.

I'm going to be around Davis tonight, so I will definitely keep my eyes open for him. (Unless you post the great news that he's been found.) *hug*

Abbie... dammit. :-(

I know you're probably at work but I'm in the immediate neighborhood right now. I'll take a stroll with a bag of Pounce and see if I can spot (and maybe catch) him.

No one brought him in to Somerville Animal Control.

You may want to post him on here: http://www.somervillema.gov/section.cfm?org=animal&page=1021

and in the meanwhile I will keep my eye out for him.

I just went looking on your street, in your back yard, etc. No sightings yet, but I'd be glad to come over and help you look tonight.

I've been around the back yard several times plus around the neighboring streets. :( I worry he would not come out for people, though.

I was driving past Highland Rd. and Kidder Ave., when I saw two women on the sidewalk stopping to play with a cat fitting your description. I thought it was odd to see such a friendly cat out and about in broad daylight yesterday.

Probably didn't go far, but sometimes indoor cats don't know what their house looks from the outside.

Put out some items that he will know by scent, like some of his bedding or something from the laundry. Or better yet, his litter box.

You could try leaving out a DVD of the Mary Tyler Moore show. Cats seem to gravitate towards it for some reason.

I saw a cat that might have been Abbie sitting on a porch on Cedar St, close to the intersection with Sartwell Ave tonight. I didn't get a close look at him, but it was definitely a rather large tuxedo cat. Unfortunately, when I went by there again ~15min later he wasn't there, but just letting you know that he might be closer to the Porter Square area now. Good luck; hope he finds his way home soon.

Thank you very much -- there is a finite number of gigantic tuxedo cats, so there's a good chance this was Abbie. I put some flyers near there and will go back tomorrow and be more thorough. Hopefully we can turn the next spotting into a capture.

(I am another of Abbie's housemates.)
