Does anyone know that the story is with the bowling alley in Ball square? Is it open to the public? Is a private function hall sort of place? With Sacco's closing in April, I'm especially interested in learning more about this place. I once tried to go there but the people bowling there at that time said something about it being private? Maybe it was a league night? (I can't recall exactly what they said- it was a few years ago) Anyway, I thought there might be someone with some knowledge of this place lurking in this group.

This subject has been discussed several times here.

I tagged all of these "local sports". Discussion of Sacco's Bowl Haven has its own tag, because I expect its redevelopment to become a hot discussion topic over the next year. Yeah, it's rather arbitrary.

It's a private club of some sort. I don't know who the club is, but I was told "not open to the public" when I was there.

I believe there's bowling up near Alewife.

Yes, that is called Lanes & Games. You can walk there from Alewife station, though it's not the most pleasant walk -- a sidewalk along a highway ramp. They have both tenpins and candlepins.

There's actually a nicer route from Alewife, through some MDC conservation land and an office park.

They are bowling right now, so swing on by and ask.

I talked to a friend who recently went bowling there! It was for a private party, and his group only got the use of the alley because someone knew someone. He said he asked about it, knowing it's in my hood (and not knowing that I knew it was private) and was confirmed that it's private.

It seems like such a pitty that it's private.

I drive by it all the time, and from what I can see on the street, it looks fairly nice inside. People are usually bowling weekday evenings.

I'm sure they could do well financially if they opened it to the public, even if for limitted time on weekends.

My lady and I walked in there once and asked if we could bowl (there were about 15 middle-aged and up men inside at the time). They said "No, we're...ah...closed for the summer. Get outta here. Head over to Alewife. They've got better lookin' women."

Afterwards, I felt strangely empty inside...

It's a front for the mob, um, uh, I mean, open for private parties only. One of many buildings that I would not be too sad to lose if they have to bulldoze it to build the Ball Square Green Line stop.

In fact, taking this by eminent domain was suggested by several people at the Ball Square Green Line meeting.
