I would so love to stop getting those ad fliers from the Globe Direct delivered to my house every week (you know, the ones with the weekly shaw's and michael's ads) but I can't find any info online about how to stop it. Every time i see it now i just picture all the copies of it that end up in the trash. Has anyone had success in getting off their mailing list?

Do you subscribe to the Globe? Those are inserts into (I think) Thursday's paper.

I don't, and I keep getting these stupid things too. They're sloppily assembled, so they fall apart and/or tear in a really annoying fashion when you try to remove them from the tiny mailboxes that are common in rental properties in these parts. They're a waste of trees since I throw mine straight in the recycle bin without even looking at it. I've never tried to get off the mailing list; I just assumed the post office delivered one per delivery address no matter what.

I've never found one in my mailbox. I assumed they were delivered by the Globe home delivery guy rather than US Postal Service.

I've been at my door at the right time and the mail carrier was the one who handed it to me, so...

No, the USPS is by law the only entity that's allowed to put *anything* in your mailbox. FedEx, UPS, your local newspaper...nope, not allowed.

nope -- there's a phone number to get off the list on the "have you seen me" white postcard.

I'll have to try calling that number and see if it does any good. I'm not hopeful.

It worked for me. i called it eight years ago, waited three weeks, and I've been off the list ever since. Works great.

They can't deliver unaddressed junk mail via the postal service; technically the fliers come with the have you seen me card.

worked for me too - haven't had that big mess of spam blowing around on my porch since.

Could you post the number, if you have it? I don't want to have to remember to scrounge for the postcard next time I get this (stupid, wasteful) circular. Thanks!

I am a Globe subscriber which means I get it TWICE - in my Thursday paper and in my mailbox. If anybody comes up with a way to end this waste of paper, I would love to know about it.

I believe you can contact your local postmaster in writing to ask that no bills or fliers be delivered to your address. To avoid any confusion, it's also handy to put a small sign on your box saying the same.

I get the same thing! I called the 800 number in tiny wee type on the bottom, left a dozen messages, never managed to get a real human being. And no, I'm not a Globe subscriber; they just show up in my mailbox totally uninvited. I am peeved. They're not even really associated with the Globe except in name; I called the paper and they said it wasn't their thing.

That pisses me off so much. Also in the fine print it mentions Globe Direct is a wholly owned subsidiary of The Globe. See my next post or my other comment here.

I'm not a Globe subscriber either, and I agree that those flyers are a complete waste of paper.

You may want to find a different battle to fight. They aren't going to go away anymore than the Chinese menus will. Just put a recycling bin by your mailbox.

I'm a Globe subscriber and get the Globe Direct ads inserted in my paper, but I don't get a second set by mail. My neighbors don't get the paper but get the ads by mail. I think this is what the Globe is shooting for, if their mailing lists are up-to-date.

From: [identity profile] icecreamempress.livejournal.com
We get both the mail and the insert versions of the ads.

I just plop them right into the recycling.

I think your best bet is to talk to the mail carrier and tell him/her you don't want the ads. Once, when I didn't get mine, I asked the mail carrier where it was, and she said, "Sorry. I thought you didn't want it." So apparently she had done something with it. She sounded as if many people don't want it. You might need to put a little note on your box, too, so the carrier can remember.

I suspect, however, that you won't be saving any trees this way. But you might give the mail carrier a lighter load.

USPS Form 1500

From: [identity profile] ravingwanderer.livejournal.com
I've not tried it, but supposedly USPS Form 1500 *could* be used for stopping any form of unwanted mail. It's the form for stopping delivery of unsolicited obscene materials. The reason it might work: the USPS (being an arm of the government) is not allowed to determine what the recipient might find obscene. If you say it is, they can make it stop.

I was somewhat tempted to use it against marketers who couldn't fathom the idea that people actually die, and dead people's names need to be *permanently* removed from mailing lists (or added to exclusion lists, or whatever).

From: [identity profile] marmota.livejournal.com
I've also tried without results to get them to stop showing up. How about starting a campaign to stuff the damn things right back into the large blue streetcorner mailboxes? After enough of that maybe they'll get the hint.

I think that pissing off your local postal service is not a good idea.

I've had resonable luck with "please deliver circulars to the recycle bin below"

But I think they have to deliver it because if they don't they get in trouble.

You know the "have you seen me" piece of white paper with lost kids on it? That's delivered with the globe direct, and it has the phone number to call to get off the list. I got off the list that way 8 years ago.

From: [identity profile] beezy515.livejournal.com
I don't know if this will help with the Globe Direct, but I recently signed up with greendimes.com, which is a service that will remove your name from direct mail lists. It cost me $15 (it's now $20), but I thought it was worth it, since it completely eliminated all of the junk mail that I had been receiving.

Date: 2008-02-06 03:12 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] derekp.livejournal.com
I also use greendimes. But it didn't stop Globe Direct, unfortunately.

I wasn't sure, since the Globe Direct stopped appearing sometime last year, for reasons unknown, and I signed up with Green Dimes in the fall. But Green Dimes has gotten rid of all of the other junk mail, which is amazing.

I called the number at the top, it was a 508 number I think and it stopped coming. such a waste and if you get it to stop coming the post person you be very happy because they hate carrying them.
I would like to know how WE could stop them all permanently, because regardless what anyone can say- they are a waste

On a related topic, does anybody know how to stop delivery of phone books? I can't remember the last time I used the phonebook (as opposed to the web) to look up a number, yet Yellowbook and Verizon continue to chuck the damn things at my house at least once a year.

Date: 2008-02-06 02:36 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] blondeamazon.livejournal.com
Oh, yes. I agree with you on that one! I end up filling my recycling bin with them!

From: [identity profile] derekp.livejournal.com
I've already gunned this years into the recycle bin, but I'm trying to remember which companies they were from. I know YellowBook and Verizon sent me a bunch. I found the number for YellowBook: 1.800.373.3280 or 1.800.373.2324

Can anyone find the Verizon number or remember other companies?

From: [identity profile] derekp.livejournal.com
Of course, that said, I've seen people delivering phone books before. One guy drives a truck with the back open and 4 or 5 guys grab books off the back of the truck and deliver them to every house. I'm not sure they're even addressed.

Date: 2008-02-06 03:30 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] chumbolly.livejournal.com
Yeah, that's my concern--the delivery system for phone books isn't address specific. In my view, those books are litter.

I just checked catalog choice and they don't have the Boston Globe Direct listed, or anything like it. Perhaps if all of us who are signed up with them suggest it, they will add it.

globe direct fliers

From: [identity profile] buckturgidsen.livejournal.com
I used to hate getting those Globe Direct mailings. So 2 months ago I found a phone number directly on the front page (the "customer service" number I think, although I think it's pretty euphemistic to refer to us as 'customers') and called it and took myself off the list. So it can definitely be done. I wish I had the number to pass on to you but I don't since I don't get their mailings anymore. :)

Here's a better contact to try:

Jane Segaloff
Globe Direct Data Processor I
jsegaloff@globe.com

Jane told me she can remove people from the distribution list if they want.
I'm not positive, but I'm guessing the sales director doesn't have much to do with the address list.

stopping Globe Direct

Date: 2009-07-22 01:57 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] gddelivery.livejournal.com
Simply an e-mail to gddirect@globe.com will stop them.
Allow three weeks for the fliers to stop after sending your e-mail.
If you are a subscriber to the Boston Globe, you should be getting them with your newspaper. If you don't subscribe, you will get them in the mail.
Please leave your complete address including ZIPCODE, and simply write "unsubscribe" in the subject line.
Be brief and be nice! Rude comments will not be processed

Call Rich Dempsey (at the Boston Globe Direct) at 508-871-1929 (email is rdempsey@bostonglobe.com) to be removed.

From: [identity profile] richdempsey.livejournal.com
I'm the Rich Dempsey in the previous post. The Globe Direct package is delivered to 1,250,000 households every week.
It's a "shared mail" package allowing national and local advertisers to get thier pitch to you. In spite of what you think about the product, it's a lot better getting all these advertisments in one package rather than each advertisement being mailed to you individually.
We understand that not everyone wants this advertising and will be happy to stop when asked. I appologize for the difficulties in the past, the newspaper industry was tightening it's belt.

You might want to have a word with your mail admins; the gddelivery@globe.com email address that is printed on the front of the fliers is bouncing as undeliverable/no such user right now. So does gddirect@globe.com.
