e. e. cummings used capitalization in his poems and poetry has different rules than prose. His decision to not use capitals was not based on any artistic choice as well. When he had a poem published in a journal put out by Harvard the editor made a typo and didn't capitalize his names. Since it was his biggest exposure at that point, he kept it.

Go without capitalization if you want. Do so on your next cover letter and see if it helps you.

Language is only a form of communication because of the shared rules. Otherwise howe, ohooow ewijonf.

I wasn't going to reply, but you're so blatantly missing my point that I think you must be trying to. So while it's against my better judgement to reply to a flame, I will.

-this is livejournal, not a cover letter

How you present yourself is how people will see you. If you type like a 12-year-old, people will see you like one. As I said, if that's fine by you, go right ahead.

-thanks for enlightening me. i now know that before the written word, there was no form of communication

So very far from what I was saying that it's ridiculous. Language is a means of communication only because you know the rules. It's like this: I have some books on my shelf that are translated from other languages. If language = communication, then I wouldn't need this, but since I don't know the rules of Chinese or Arabic, I need the help of someone who does.

Similarly, giving someone the "okay" gesture in a foreign country can get you laughed at or spat on, because the rules of communication are different there.

If you still don't understand me, you're being obtuse.

*rolls eyes*

Not only do you type like a 12-year-old, but this post and this line makes me think you act like one.

But, so long as you've dragged this down to a flame war and I've stepped into it:

*flips you the bird*

hey buddy, let me sum this thread up for you. someone posted a thought. some other dude responded by attacking the original poster's choice to not capitalise (or is it capitalize?) some letters.

we all understood the post. every single person who read it, was able to comprehend it.

and that is the only point i'm trying to make.

your whole point about language only working because of shared rules is fundamentally flawed. why? BECAUSE WE COULD ALL UNDERSTAND THE POST, YOU ASSHAT!!!

you want to talk about blatantly missing the point of a post? dude do yourself a favor and review this thread.

and for the record, as long as you continue to spout arrogant views whilst acting like a petulant child - i will continue to respond to your posts.

Someone posted a thought.

Someone criticized him for not using capital letters.

You said it was just as powerful without them.

I said, I disagree, that it takes power away.

You and others jumped in with petty and defensive responses.

Arrogant? Where do I say I'm better than anyone? The guy posted what, judging by people in Davis Square and previous posts on this journal, should've been a popular opinion and got pissed on. Part of that was because he came across like an asshole, part of that was because of how he typed. People may have understood what he was saying, but more than a few dismissed it because of how he said it. That's the power of the written word for you.

Petulant child? You're the one who started rolling their eyes like a kid who was told he'd get no ice cream until he finished his vegetables.

...yes. and then you proceeded to say that, "Language is only a form of communication because of the shared rules. Otherwise howe, ohooow ewijonf."

which is an absurd comment.

as i've repeatedly established.

or maybe i can put it in a form that you understand:

sljfsljfsljflsjfslsjflsfj?

are you done yet? i know i am.
