...and in quite spectacular fashion, with big red inspectional services "X"s on the roof, a "Stop Work" order on the door, and a warning sign reading "UNSAFE DO NOT ENTER floor of building has collapsed".

I'm sure there's a story there.

I bet the owner will find it's not worth saving the building, and it'll be demolished for condos. I'll miss the baking smells, but not the garbage smells or the truck traffic.

Damn. That wasn't even there this morning! I am NOT looking forward to the sights and sounds and inconvenience of demolition and construction there! Grr.

I'm aware this question will sound vaguely absurd, but where IS this secret donut factory of which you speak?

Is that the one between the bike path and morrison ave? my grandparents lived on the corner of boston ave and morrison and I remember going to the secret donut factory for a donut or 2, that is if it's the same one (30 years later...)

Yup, that's it, at the end of Highland Road.

geez, I wish I knew it was still there, ahh, memories...

On the other side, I live in medford over by the Alumni Fields, and every once in a while i get the baking aroma of something sweet from somewhere and it just makes my night!

Oooh...I'll be looking for that sign on the way home tonight.

I will miss the smell of baked goodness though.

Danish Pastry House perhaps?

From: [identity profile] ronhaha108.livejournal.com
Don't think so, the yummy smells have been there long before Danish Pastry House was there, it's possibly La Cachas or the pastry place on Main Street and Harvard.. It's possible it's the Dunkin's "factory" closer to Medford Square, though that's probably too far away...

*here's hoping for yummy smells tonight*

Let's hope nobody was in the place when that floor gave way. There's nothing on either of our local newspapers' web sites yet.

That smell was heaven. I live 2 houses down. I always thought it was oompa loompas, I never saw anyone go in or out.

I read that post and immediately thought of you.
I believe you mentioned it when I complained about donut smells taunting me on Thursday evenings.

Ha! Yes! Me too.
God, it's evil.
We figured out it might be Demet's Donuts or another nearby donut place, but it's so tempting. Bad to discover it the first day you're on a diet, though, as we did.

Aww, rats. That place was outside of my walking commute, but worth the trip. They made the best Old Fashioned donuts I'd ever tasted.

It is Demet's. God, I love driving by that place when they're baking...

Actually, I think it was there Saturday, because I meant to come tell everybody on LJ then.

That is so sad. If you knocked on their door they would sell you a box of fresh donuts for $5. :(

South Medford has a "Secret Donut Factory" of its own on Mystic Ave across from the VFW hall.

I wish there was a Somerville secrets resource (other than LJ) for people new to the area that love town secrets. I guess things wouldn't be so secretive then though.

The neighborhood will never be the same without Russ' Donuts!
There's nothing like the smell of baking donuts on a cool fall day, and the 25 cent donuts that neighborhood kids used to get!

Plus DPH doesn't generally seem to be too smelly (having walked past often in morning and evening for work, not necessarily during baking hours)

Following up on this a couple weeks later (I've been w/o computer for a month) - was there ever any news as to what happened?

As of a couple days ago, the city's notices were still posted on the building, but most of the "VIOLATION" ticket had been torn off -- all that remained was the word VIOLATION itself.

At yesterday's Davis Square Task Force meeting, someone presented his plan to demolish the condemned Russ's Donut building and replace it with two side-by-side 3-bedroom townhouses. I'll try to make a separate post about the DSTF meeting later this week.
