Have you noticed discrepencies in credit card transactions at Star Market/Shaws (I forgot which it is now)?

All my receipts for the last six years go into MS Money.  At most, I make a couple entry mistakes per year.  When my February cc statement arrived, two charges didn't match what I'd put into MS Money -- Shaws in Porter Square and Star Market in Medford.  The dozens of other entries were fine, as usual.  In March it happened a third time: Porter Square Shaws again.  By the time I got my cc statements I had thrown out the receipts, and what records the cc company is sending will take 6-8 weeks to arrive (and it's doubtful that they're itemized for me to verify the charges).  I won't get the ~$55 back, but I'd like to know if this is widespread or if my typing fingers have a vendetta against Shaws.  I also wanted to give a heads up -- check your statements against your receipts.  I'll call Shaws' corporate office during open hours and let them know.

Thanks for your time.

I use Quicken to download transactions from my credit card company every couple of days, and the only discrepancy I've ever had was at the Shaws in Porter. In that case, I shopped on Day 1 for groceries, was charged, and then the charge was duplicated on Day 3, and refunded about a month later. Very odd, but ultimately not something I did anything about, since I ended up paying the correct amount in the end.

I haven't had this problem, but I did have a strange occurrence where shaws eventually charged my account ... but it was about a month and a half after I made the purchase. :shrugs: I don't know.

I actually shop there very rarely - only when forced to by a lack of time and their convenient location. If I have any time to spare, I prefer to go just about anywhere else. Ick, Shaws.

LOL me too! I used to call it the "HorribleStarMarket" (all one word)!

Duplicate charges

I had an experience about a year ago where two double purchases showed up on my credit card from the porter square shaws. I dealt with it through Shaws, just at the customer service desk, rather than my credit card company, and they were able to credit my card. I did have the receipt though. If you used your shaws card, they may be able to compare the charges to the record of your purchases from that. Good luck.

I almost always check against receipts, I've shopped there ... 105 times in the past 6 years, and I don't think I've ever noticed a mismatch.

I've never had an error there, but I use a debit (ATM) card rather than a credit card.

I haven't had a problem with being double charged, but I have had things ring up the wrong price on many occasions. If something rings up wrong and you take it to the customer service desk not only do they give you the item for free, they give you the amount of money it rang up wrong.

I used to never really both to check my receipts and once I noticed that this happened I was more vigilant and I find stuff scans the wrong price all the time.

Shaw's/Star recently changed their scanner accuracy policy. They no longer give the item free. They just give you the difference, so you end up paying the cheaper price. It's in the fine print posted at every register.

I'd like to see a policy where they fix the price in the computer while you watch, so everyone else who buys that item doesn't have to pay the incorrect price.

You could probably go look at your credit card charges online, before you get your statement (they'll generally post the next day), and compare them to your receipts then, so you don't have to keep track of them until you get the statement.

Moreover, you can request a copy of the signed receipt from the store through your credit card company. I believe the store has to provide it or the charge is void.

I've not had a problem but I it's extemely rare that I don't pay cash. There are far fewer things that can go wrong, they're more obvious when they do, and it makes it much harder for stores to sell my purchasing information.

I'm the anal type that keeps receipts and checks them against my credit card bills each month. I've never seen a charge go through for a different price than on the receipt, not at Shaws or anywhere else. We do most of our grocery shopping at the Shaws in Porter, so I figure we would have seen it by now if it does happen.

If I heard correctly, Shaws had a data security breach recently. Everyone who uses a card there should keep tabs on their accounts for a while.

It was Hannaford that had the much-publicized data security breach recently.

Which is not to say that Shaw's isn't just as vulnerable to same.

I like to pay with check at Shaw's.
