I have an odd sort of question.

I live on Russell Road (somerville) however within walking distance is Russell Street (cambridge). I am having a lot of issues with packages being delivered to the wrong address. It more often than not is UPS but there is the occasion that USPS has done this as well. I have two packages that a company is saying they were delivered last Friday. However I was home all day and never received anything which also says it couldnt have been left and then stolen. I know my usual UPS driver and he knows me so he wouldnt deliver it to Russell St but a non-regular route driver might? Any suggestions on what I should do? I tried calling the local UPS office but I couldnt seem to gain headway. This happened a lot last Christmas and UPS was able to recover some of the packages by going to the other home and they were still in the hallway. I dont really feel comfortable going to some random house to talk to the people who live there.

Perhaps send a letter to the people at the other address with your contact information (name/email/phone) and request that they let you know of mis-deliveries and offer to do the same for them? Many people are often willing to help things get to the right place as long as they know how to do it...

If you have the tracking number, you can also check on the UPS website to see who signed for it, if anyone.

Yeah...

I live at XX YY Ave a few blocks away from XX YY Street and have this problem all the time. Talking to the people at the other address was really helpful. Most likely they'll be friendly about it, especially if you offer to redirect any of their packages that you may receive.

I have had similar problems. The only thing that seems to work for UPS is to make sure that anything that you have sent to you is "signature required". I'm guessing that if someone has to sign for the package, they will see your name and realize ( driver or recipient ) that they have the wrong place.

As far as USPS goes.... they can be VERY frustrating to deal with on such issues. Your only 100% solution is to get a P.O. box.

will prevent the Somerville post office from screwing up your delivery

so it's not just me? I had a horrible time getting a package from a friend in Kansas, she had to send it to me 4 times because it kept getting returned to sender. And I just ordered 2 books from amazon, but neither of them have gotten here yet :(

That's why I have a PO Box. Between getting other tenants' mail (once I got the first floor couple's Visa statement...good thing I'm not into identity theft!), mail being crammed in the box so badly I had to rip it to get it out, and mail being left on the porch regardless of weather (rain, wind...) and calling and complaining and getting NO WHERE...I got a PO Box at South Station (close to where I work). They're open 24 hours, and I actually get my mail.

Somerville is the worst mail delivery experience I have ever had. And I lived in Georgia for a while.

I would say I'm glad it's not just us, but misery doesn't particularly love company in this case. Except I guess it's good to know we're not imagining things. GAHH.

Better than Cambridge. I think my Central Square postofficer was drunk.

Same here, packages usually come correctly, but food delivery always ends up on Sterling Street in Somerville, not Medford which I always explicitly state... always, fortunately it's only a 5 minute drive, it's just funny how it always seems to happen and no amount of extra direction seems to matter...

i use "address line 2" on the address part

I have actually had the exact opposite thing happen. I had a letter delivered that had my name spelled right, the street name COMPLETELY wrong, the number, city and zip correct, but said MI instead of MA.

Granted there is no one else with my full name on the planet and no one else with my last name in the area, but still. I was impressed.

Ha. Almost completely unrelated, but it reminded me of this. There's one, um, not-so-bright character in our accounting department who had my state set as ALASKA in payroll for waaaay too long. I pointed it out several times, but it took her forever to change it. Everything else was correct, so the USPS was pretty good about noticing the zip code and figuring it out, but we had a running joke around the office about how I had the world's longest commute to Cambridge from my home in Somerville, Alaska.

ooh ooh, me too!

The Tufts bursar had my address as XXX St Somerville, MA NETHERLANDS for about a year (I lived in the Netherlands when I applied to grad school--but not in Somerville, NL!). And it was always in all-caps, too.

My sister-in-law had some issues when addressing her wedding invitations and the one to my husband just had his name and his address on Mass Ave, but no city, state, or zip, and (miraculously) it got to him!

Yeah we live at XX YY street, Somerville just half a mile from XX YY street, Medford. Used to have more problems than we do now, and worse problems with pizza delivery than with mail. Still, I don't think they'd mind a note on the door. It'd be easy for them to give you a call if something showed up.

I had a similar problem with FedEx for a while. They kept delivering my packages to Willis Ave. in Medford, instead of Willow Ave. in Somerville. The only thing that worked for me was to call FedEx and make them redeliver correctly. At first, the woman on Willis just called me to come get the packages, but FedEx didn't learn about the mistake that way. I eventually learned to call FedEx when this happened, so the FedEx driver would have to redeliver and learn where I lived.

I haven't had the problem for a couple of years now, so I think she finally got the message.

Maybe you should call UPS and explain the mistake you think they made. If the driver has to try to redeliver, he/she might be more careful next time. Sometimes the drivers just have to become aware that there are two streets with similar names, I think.

Our ongoing mail and pizza woes are nothing compared to the fact that our moving truck went to XX YY Street, Somerville instead of XX YY Street, Cambridge. After almost an hour of wondering if they'd gotten lost or run off, we called them and they said "but we're right in front of your house!"

I probably should stop by XX YY Street in Somerville and introduce myself. They were probably confused by the moving truck.

I had this same problem with UPS and they SUCKED. I have received nothing delivered by them since I moved to Webster St. and I don't know why...even though I've been here when they supposedly delivered.

I ended up having to get reimbursed by the company the items were ordered through themselves. I couldn't get hold of anyone local for UPS and their help center online just pissed me off even though I was speaking with a real person - the only thing they would say was that it was delivered and I had to contact the retailer. They wouldn't even answer any of my questions.

Sorry for you. : (

And how many people in the Biotech cluster on Landsdowne Street in Cambridge have had to help confused delivery people parked outside (or inside at the bar for all we know) forer Gillian's or Avalon on Landsdowne in Boston? I mean, did the air handling hood repair guys really think there was lab space under the bowling alley?

;)

I get packages sent to work, because they get regular UPS deliveries and someone signs for them and calls me when they come in. Could you start doing that?
