Hopefully I'm not missing anything, but I went through the entire gardening tag, and a few pages of the business services tag, and couldn't find anything that obviously covered this...

For the first time in several years, I have a porch with planters, and I'd like to grow something in them--possibly flowers, definitely herbs. Since it's April, it's a little late for starting from seeds indoors (and I'm lazy and busy and out of practice growing things from seeds anyway), so I'd like to buy some actual seedlings or adult plants to put into the planters as soon as I'm sure it's not going to freeze again. However, I haven't run across any gardening stores or nurseries in the few months I've lived in Somerville. Where's a good place around Davis Square or in Somerville in general to buy plants and gardening materials? Since I don't currently have any gardening tools or resources, I'd prefer to go to an actual gardening store if possible, not just buy plants from a grocery store.

I own a car right now, but will be giving it up in a few months, so anything outside of T range will only be accessible to me for the short term.

~edit~ These suggestions are awesome. Thank you muchly!

Pemberton Farms & Garden Center is in Cambridge (2225 Mass. Ave.) but a very short walk from Davis Square. They dont' have much outside yet, but they will once things warm up a bit.

My vote is for Pemberton Farms (http://www.pembertonfarms.com/) (do not let the website fool you, they also have a good selection of plants). On Mass Ave, within walking distance of Davis.

Pemberton's rocks, but if also you want a 2nd option there's Ricky's in Union Sq across from the post office.

I get my plants from either Pembertons or Rickys.

But I get my gardening tools and supplies from Home Despot.

HUMONGOUS shout out for Ricky's

For so many reasons ... first and foremost it's a small locally owned business in the heart of Union Square. Secondly because everything I've purchased from him (herbs, annuals, potting soil, compost, you name it) has been best quality. Thirdly because Ricky himself is a mensch. Pemberton is good too, but I always feel great giving my ca$h to Ricky.

Or, if you can stand the waiting, there will be lots of interesting seedlings at the Davis Square Farmer's Market when it opens (late) next month.

Erm, don't be so sure about that. I mean, you can give it a shot, but many people wait as late as Memorial Day to do outside planting. Just last year I think we had a frost early May and a lot of people lost their plants.

i would, but i'm very paranoid about this sort of thing. i know a lot of people stay home memorial day weekend and do their planting those three days because it's the perfect time for a frost-free season.

I agree with this. The people I know who have planted around here for years, almost all say June 1 to plant outdoors. But Memorial Day weekend is only a week earlier, so that's a good choice, too.

*cries* Please can winter end soon? Please?

*sigh* Well, that's good to know; this is the first year I am intending to do Serious Gardening of any kind.

I tend to get seedlings from the Davis Farmer's Market. In the past I've gotten gardening stuff from Tags in Porter Square. It's also possible you can have some of my leftover stuff since Miles always eats my poor plants anyway.
